Apply clean hydraulic oil on all internal parts. 3. Inspect the piston lands. If necessary, clean with emery cloth the lands of any nicks or burrs that can cut piston seal. NOTE: The piston seal can be made more pliable by warming it with your hands or by putting seal in hot water for approximately five minutes. 4. Once started, install piston seal (B) as quickly as possible to keep the amount of time that seal is stretched to a minimum. Install wear ring (A). 6. Check if piston seal is loose. If seal can be tumed,it has been stretched too much and can be damaged during assembly into barrel. 7. When using a ring compressor, put a piece of shim stock between seal and compressor at the joint so it does not damage seal. When using a plastic tie band and hose clamp, grind a taper (B) on one end of tie band. Install tie band with the taper against piston seal. Before tightening the hose clamp, check to be sure tie band is under hose clamp all around piston. ON With th e fuel co ck lever in this positi on, fuel flows to the carbur etor when th e engine is running. Turn th e fuel cock le- ver to this posi tion wh en start ing t he en- gine an d ridin g. RES This i ndicates reser ve. With the fu el cock le ver in this po sition, the fu el re- serve is made avai lable. Qu ickly tu rn the fuel cock lever to this p osition if you run ou t of fuel wh ile ridin g, otherw ise the en gine ma y stall and wil l have to be prime d (see “ PR I ” ). After tur ning the fuel cock leve r t o “ RES ”, r efuel as s oon as po ssible and be sure to tur n the fu el cock lever ba ck to “ ON ”. PRI This indicat es pri me. Wit h the fu el cock lever in thi s positi on, th e engine can be “ primed ”. Turn the fu el cock lever to this positi on when the engine h as been al- lowed to run ou t of fuel. This sends fuel direc tly to th e carbure tor, whi ch will make starti ng e asier. (See furthe r down fo r an e xplan ation o f the igni tion circ uit cut-o ff system. ) W ARNING EWA10240 The vehicle must not be ridden with the sidestand down, or if the side- stand cannot be properly moved up (or does not stay up), otherwise the sidestand could contact the ground and distract the ope rator, resulting in a possible loss of control. Yamaha ’ s ignition circuit cut-off system has been designed to assist the operator in ful filling the respon- sibility of raising the sidestand be- fore st arting off. It cuts the ru nning e ngine when the transm ission is in gear and the sid- estand is moved down. Shift the transmission into gear. 9. Mov e the sidestand down. Does the engine stall. After the engine has stalled: 10. Mov e the sidestand up. 11. K eep the clutch lev er pulled. 12. Push the star t switch. Does the engine start. The system is OK. The motorc ycle can be ridden. The neutral s witch may not be working correctly. The motorc ycle should not be rid den until check ed by a Y amaha dealer. The sidestand s witch ma y not be wor king correctly. The clutch s witch ma y not be wor king correctly. EAU32622 Starting and warming up a cold engine In ord er for th e igni tion c ircuit cut-off system to enabl e starting, on e of the follow ing co ndit ions must be met. The tr ansmissi on is in th e neut ral posi tion. ? The tran smis sion is i n gear wi th the clut ch lever pu lled and th e sid- esta nd up. See pa ge 4-1 1 for more inform a- tion. 1. Turn the fuel coc k leve r to “ ON ”. 2. Turn the k ey to “ ON ” and make sure tha t the eng ine stop switch is set to “ RUN ”. 3. Shift the tra nsm ission into the neu- tral p osition. (See pa ge 6-2. ) The neut ral in dicato r ligh t shoul d come on. If not, ask a Yamah a dealer to check the electrical ci rcuit. 4. Tur n the st arte r (cho ke) on and compl etely c lose th e thro ttle. ( See page 4 -8.) 5. St art the en gine by push ing the start swit ch. If the en gin e fails to start, rele ase the start switch, w ait a few sec- onds, an d then try agai n. Each starti ng attempt should be as short as poss ible to preserv e the bat- tery. D o not cran k the e ngine more than 1 0 second s on any one at- tempt. 6. After starting the en gine, mo ve the starte r (cho ke) back halfway. NOTICE: For maximum engine life, always warm the engine up before starting off. TIP The eng ine is wa rm when it respo nds nor mally to the thr ottle wi th the st arter (cho ke) turned off. To avoi d the possi- bilit y of excessive exh aust emissions, neve r lea ve the starte r (c hoke) on lon g- er t han ne cessary.
