Patrick T Vaughan 2.0 out of 5 stars Some descent info and insights for beginners exploring evolutionary psch, buddhism, etc. I was a bit disturbed by dualistic, atheistic approach and very short-sighted, under- researched views on mental health, spiritualism and diet. Particularly disturbed by total lack of respect given to value of human social connections and families and fact that 95 references to women included sexual innuendo. Another book in disturbing trend from privileged neo-liberals to use Buddhism and pop-science to justify pursuit of self-absorbed, individualistic, atheistic lifestyles. May Jevan continue to question, awaken and find peace and freedom from suffering and delusion. As an anthropology major, it was difficult to read some of the anecdotes that the author is trying to correlate with causation. I realize this isn't a textbook, but still, the sweeping, oversimplified, and almost problematic ideas posited by the author are almost laughable at times. Sprinkled throughout, there are so many derogatory references to women, I honestly can't believe this book in this form was approved by an editor. I sincerely feel the author didn't mean to purposefully come across this way, but that is almost shocking because it's so diametrically opposed to some of the bigger concepts in his own writing.http://www.slezanie.eu/userfiles/bose-av3-2-1ii-media-center-manual.xml I'm not a prude by any means, but the remarks and stories seem to serve no literary purpose, reminded me of high school locker room talk. I don't normally read many reviews prior to reading a book, but this was so bad, I couldn't wait to find out if my opinion was in the minority, thankfully, others seem to agree. If the topics in this book interest you, there are many many better examples to be found. Sadly, this is a poorly researched, watered down, juvenile attempt at trying to explain some honestly good concepts, it really doesn't do them the justice they deserve. But in a good way. The author takes a secular approach to the meaning of life. If you're already willing to live as an optimistic nihilist, this is the book for you. It goes over evolutionary reasons for the way we are, why modern society is a bad fit, and how to make yourself happier and healthier within that context. Briefly touches on a lot of popular topics related to this- the Paleo diet, hunter-gatherer lifestyles, etc etc. The book also talks a good amount about meditation and eastern philosophy. The book doesn't cite the studies mentioned super well, but it makes a good case for meditation and adopting a little bit of buddhist philosophy to make yourself happier. It doesn't claim to have any big metaphysical answers, but the advice is a decent place to start if you're looking to be happier. It can be pretty pretentious at times, but that won't bother you if you already agree with the author- and if you're buying this book I'm guessing you do. Experienced hipster white guy buddhists will probably be familiar with most of the concepts in this book, but it's worth a read through anyway, if only to give you new ways to explain this stuff to your friends and family. My biggest gripe while reading the book is that the author seems to think following this lifestyle will lead dozens of beautiful gathering (not hunting, of course, because that would confuse their girlbrains) women to line up to bang him.http://superbia.lgbt/flotaganis/1647623773 It probably helps sell his pitch to hipster bros but it was pretty weird for me. I'm not denying gender-based division of labor in most studied hunter-gatherer societies, I'm just saying his attachment to everyone being hot (and hot to trot) before agriculture killed the party is a little off-putting. I'll put it this way- I'm a bit of a hippie, but I'm not very secular, I don't dig Buddhism much, and if someone called themselves a biohacker in real life I'd have to try really hard not to punch them. But I liked this book a lot.The stories illuminate, the ideas are clearly explained, and from as early as page 20, you’ll start reconsidering your life choices. I’ve spent an unhealthy portion of my life cynical about happiness, walking around with an argument stuck in my head. This book pulled me out of that. I don’t know if I’ll go back to that, but it’s been three weeks already, and I’m still meditating, still thinking positively, and still challenging my thoughts. Not too shabby. Many people lead physically healthy and nutritious lifestyles but make little to no time for their mental well-being. I imagine this book will bridge that gap for a lot of people. You may be frustrated to learn (as I was) the reasons why many of our physical and mental illnesses were virtually non-existent in the bodies of our hunter-gatherer ancestors. And you thought it was purely genetics. Traditional dogmatic buddhist or highly sensitive politically correct readers may sneer at Pradas' relaxed approach and his casual yet witty sexual references. This book isn't for you. But! You should read it, don't bother wasting time on the trolling review and send it to a friend or family member who might live a better life and gain some understanding into why you spend so much time on the cushion.Much of the advice abut diet, exercise, meditation etc is not new, but the ideas were often well-expressed.GELBYSON.COM/images/boss-900-digital-recorder-manual.pdf BUT the author seems pre-occupied with a particular, rather misogynistic, view of gender and sexuality. The book is peppered with bro remarks that speak of attractive women as objects, with admiration for men who have frequent sex with lots of different women, and with praise for societies where people have sex very frequently. There are no women cited as research participants at any stage, only as sexual objects. Even his interest in anthropology seems in large part motivated by a desire to bolster his conservative view of gender roles.Jevan's response was essentially that 'they were jokes' about the men, not the women.A great achievement for someone who rarely finishes a book. It spoke to me. Educated me and deeply resonated with changes I am currently going through. We are all going to die. So why do we waste so much time worrying about nothing. This book will teach. What is causing the rise of chronic conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, and depression? In Why Buddhism Is True, Wright leads listeners on a journey through psychology, philosophy, and a great many silent retreats to show how and why meditation can serve as the foundation for a spiritual life in a secular age.We see authoritative numbers that tell us the calorie count of what we're about to consume everywhere. Here's the thing, however, that most people have no idea about. All of the calorie counts that you see everywhere today, are wrong. Dr Giles Yeo, obesity researcher at Cambridge University, challenges the conventional model and demonstrates that all calories are not created equal. He addresses why popular diets succeed, at least in the short term, and why they ultimately fail, and what your environment has to do with your bodyweight. There was interest in the tribal examples cited but after these the book seemed to focus on mindfulness and Buddhism and how meditation can help us daily. Not such a bad thing but I have read other authors who have done this in a more coherent and integrated manner. As I came to the closing chapters, I felt that what we had here was yet another self-help book rebranded with the trendy new descriptor of a 'bio-hackers' guide. To summarise: a promising start which did not fulfill its initial potential for the reasons stated. By the closing sections this bio-hacking approach left me feeling 'hacked off' and was dragging out concepts over many chapters which could have been examined in far fewer. The book itself taught me nothing apart from there are tribes that don’t live like modern people. Wow! How insightful. A total waste of money. I think I finally get what it’s all about. A very useful tool for helping you to get past all the bullshit in life and finally start living!Everything this in our head, everything is also not real and nothing matters.Life is a brief journey. I tried the meditation, it is difficult. If I can improve on the that then all the other problems will be reduced. Definitely a thought provoking and enjoyable listen.Well worth the listen. Even if you don't get the meditation aspect, it's still an interesting perspective on the concept of obtaining contentment in life.I’ve read lots of books on related subjects and this is just gimicky trash. We actually laughed repeatedly at how bad it is. If you’re actually interested in these subjects, look elsewhere. Listen to this to become what you were intended to be!Listen to this book. Then listen to it again. Some stuff debatable but overall good perspective Worth listening!I would say, he mostly falls short of both. He does cite some studies, and give examples from history, but he makes hasty generalizations based on these examples. At one point he tells a story of, he and a friend, picking up on two girls. He puts himself up as an example by bragging about telling his date to “go with him now”, after the “prettier“ of the two “wanted” him instead. For a book with the title, “The Awakened Ape“, I was amazed at the authors obvious lack of self awareness, at times. I would recommend, instead, listening to, “Why Buddhism is True“, by Robert Wright. Wright, accomplishes most of what this book is trying to accomplish, and without the pretentiousness that is found here. Jevan Pradas has brought together science and ancient practices to create a guide for the living in harmony with our essential nature. An incredible book that has changed my life. Thank you Jevan I appreciate the author's adventures with the Amazonian tribe(s), and that he is speaking from personal experiences. I resonate with the gist of his bio-hacking suggestions. However, I felt the later chapters around Buddhist practices were from a Buddhist seeker's perspective, someone indoctrinated by many dhamma talks with Bhante G and Ajahn Brahm. Better if he shared the essence of his personal experience with meditation, in his own words, and left the Buddha out of it.This is something everyone interested in biohacking needs to know.
