Currently, the car is produced at Volkswagen plants in Emden, Zwickau (Germany) and other plants. The name Trade wind came from the wind of the same name. Initially, they offered two- and four-door sedans and similar three- and five-door versions. The model shared a modern fastback style, designed by Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro. In fact, the first Passat was the Fastback version of the sedan Audi 80, introduced a year earlier. The five-door wagon was introduced in 1974, which was sold to Audi Fox in the markets of North America. In Europe, the Passat was equipped with two rectangular, two round 7-inch or four round 5.5-inch headlights, depending on the configuration. The goal, according to the manufacturer, was to more clearly differentiate the car from a mechanically similar Audi 80. A restyling dashboard in the Golf style was used, the radio and heating control systems were installed centrally in one unit. Engine rims, gearbox and exhaust system have been modified to reduce internal noise; Comfort was also improved by changing springs and shock absorbers. The car’s wheels were enlarged in size, and an improved stabilizing bar was installed behind it. The three- and five-door hatchback and station wagon were manufactured in North America for and during the 1974 model year. The only available engine was a carburetor 1.5-liter 75-hp (56 kW) (or 70 hp (52 kW) in 1975), replaced since 1976 by an injector engine in volume of 1.6 liters 84 hp. Bosch (58 kW). Platform B2 is again based on the corresponding platform Audi 80, launched in 1978. Passat B2 became a bit longer, the design of the car was updated, which was now immediately determined by Passat: the most obvious difference is the rectangular headlights. By this time, the front-wheel drive and the hatchback-type body have become commonplace on this car. The all-wheel drive version of Syncro was introduced in October 1984, initially only with a powerful five-cylinder engine. In Mexico from 1984 to 1988, both VW Corsar and Corsar Variant (4-door sedan and 5-door station wagon, respectively). In Argentina, from 1987 to 1991, under the name VW Carat. In Brazil the station wagon was called VW Quantum. The sedan and the Passat B2 wagon were produced in South Africa for the local market until 1987. Also called “Formel E”, it provided the best fuel consumption. The all-wheel drive system used in the Passat Syncro has a mechanical identical to the Audi 80 quattro, and not the Volkswagen Golf Syncro. The lower part of the body of the Syncro version was completely different: a central tunnel for the transmission was introduced, the fuel tank was changed, there was no spare wheel (to make room for a complicated rear axle). Only the most popular version of Variant has been redesigned. The Syncro version was also available in the North American market, with only a five-cylinder engine. The three-door hatchback was canceled, and VW Santana Europe was renamed VW Passat. The world production volume is at least 4.5 million. It was the first cross-motor Passat, built on its own platform Volkswagen, which has nothing to do with the platform B3 Audi. The car, although designated as B3, was based on platform A, which was used for the Volkswagen Golf model. This generation of the Passat had only 2 body styles: a four-door sedan or a five-door wagon. The model was called Passat in all markets. The syncro version now used a four-wheel drive system similar to the Volkswagen Golf. The list of complete sets in the European market included: The issue was stopped in 1996. Unlike previous cars, produced since 1988, they are again unified with the same Audi A4 and A6. This allowed the use of more powerful and modern Audi powertrains of longitudinal arrangement. The all-wheel drive versions of the fifth-generation syncro and 4motion cars also use a system identical to the fourth-generation quattro Audi (with the Torsen center differential). The changes were mostly cosmetic, but at the same time, new headlights, bumpers, taillights and chrome in the finish gave Passat the look of a new car. The engines were modernized, the equipment was updated. A bit later for the European market will be released Skoda Superb I on the same platform. In 2005, the next generation Passat LWB, called Volkswagen Passat Lingyu, appeared. Unlike its predecessor, the Passat B6 no longer shared its platform with the equivalent Audi model (Audi A4).The transition to the Haldex system also led to the fact that control and behavior became similar to a front-wheel-drive car. With the Haldex system, during normal driving, the car behaves as a front-wheel drive, until an axle slip is detected. At the time of slippage, up to 50 of the torque can be transmitted to the rear axle. The cost of the car was 55 thousand US dollars. Passat CC was created as a competitor to Mercedes CLS, it is more stylish and luxurious than the previously released Passat B6. In the US, the name Passat CC was changed to CC. The engines offered in CC are identical to the conventional Passat. At the end of 2011 Passat CC received a Used new exterior body panels, with the exception of roof and glazing, with noticeable changes in the grille and headlights. The overall dimensions are the same as in PassatB6, but the length is more by 4 mm. New features include adaptive chassis control (DCC), dynamic light indicators without glare, a fatigue detection system and an automatic “urban emergency braking” system. The interior is slightly different from the B6, the main design of the instrument panel remains unchanged. There are 6-7 choices -step automatic robot DSG and 6-speed mechanics. For the updated model Volkswagen refused the name Passat CC for all markets, now it’s Volkswagen CC. For the Passat B8, ten petrol and diesel engines from 120 to 280 hp are prepared. (among them there is an option for methane). Two novelties deserve special attention from power plants. The second is a hybrid unit consisting of a 156-horsepower 1.4 TSI engine and an 80 kW electric motor. The total output of the system is 211 hp. The battery that is charged from the socket allows you to drive 50 km on one electricity.Learn how your comment data is processed. While that’s not Camry numbers, compared to where Volkswagen stood in the early 1990s it was positively a blockbuster. But while that production success made the Passat a common sight on most road, there are still some very rare variations of the B5 chassis that could easily slip by most non-enthusiast’s eyes as just another example. Obviously, when “rare” and “Passat” come up in conversation, almost immediately “W8” follows. And rare they were, as only a total of 5,361 W8s made the trip across the Atlantic; just over 1 of total Passat production. But even more rare is the car we see here. A total of 23,606 1.8T 4Motions were sold between 2001, 2004 and 2005 in Canada and the U.S. in sedan and wagon form. If we filter down to Variants, the number drops to 5,962. That number gets even more rare when you see how many selected the manual transmission option; a scant 657 between the U.S. and Canada in both 2004 and 2005.Only 78k miles, timing belt has been done, runs and drives excellentCanton, MA 0202They’re also coveted by a very specific subset of Volkswagen fans. The 4Motion was only available in GLS form, meaning you got the nicer BBS-made Michigan alloys, but you didn’t get the wood trim and automatic climate control of the GLX models. However, usually when these rare Passats come to market they command a premium over the more luxurious Audi. That’s especially true of this particular one, since it has far below average mileage and is well above average condition. In fact, this might be one of the nicest condition Passats available right now. So from a “does it make sense” standpoint, this car is a firm “no”.However, if we look historically, it’s easy to see why the manufacturers choose not to send certain models.Bookmark the permalink. And it was indeed very rare. I bought the TDI that year, and as much as I loved it, in retrospect this was the build to buy. But the same dealer appears to have a great range of stick shift inventory.Starting even with the B2 ? If it exists, wouldn’t it be lighter, slightly smaller, and much more efficient. A Jetta 5-speed, 4Motion, TDI. There’s the hot socks. The diesel motors are heavier than the 1.8Ts and don’t offer a real performance advantage, and the Jetta isn’t really any lighter than the Passat in the grand scheme, but it would be pretty neat. I think the Passat is much better looking than the Mk.4 Golf Variant, personally, but that might just be me. I wanted to trade my ’01 S4 avant which was just out of warranty for something trustworthy for the ex wife and kids. At that time the B5.5 Passat was at its end and it was difficult to secure a 4motion wagon with a stick, and in fact it was a very rare bird that VW did not market officially. The TDI was appealing for its torque curve as we stepped out of the S4. In fact it (TDI) was a really nice car except for an engine design flaw which showed itself later. It was such a nice car that I actually bought another. By 2009 I found such a great trade in opportunity that I swapped mine for an ’09 Jetta TDI Sportwagen with three pedals. Perhaps it’s my advancing age or something, but I have really enjoyed the TDI driving experience. I really enjoy living with a modern TDI with three pedals, and with dedicated snows they have served me well. I dream of a mechanical all wheel drive TDI with a manual transmission, but here in the US they are just that, a dream. Now, I drive a 2012 Jetta TDI Sportwagen with three pedals. Audi has gone in a direction that is not so appealing to me as much as I revere Quattro. I prefer a more basic driving experiece and no shift my front wheel drive diesel.Your email will not be sold or spammed, we promise! Case in point, today’s 2004 B5.5 1.8T 4Motion Variant 5-speed.But while the GLX focused on luxury and was only offered with the Tiptronic transmission (unless you stepped up to the W8), you could opt for the 5-speed manual with the 1.8T. It was something few people did; a scant 2,333 manuals were sold in North America, with just 657 of those being wagons. 516 made it to the United States, and this is one of 16 Stonehenge Gray over Anthracite leatherette 2004s originally sold: Very rare wagon. There were just a few hundreds imported with 5 speed and 1.8 turbo motor. I am the second owner. All options except leather. Very well maintained. Bilstein shocks, red coil packs. Just installed new calipers, rotors and pads in rear. Runs strong and handles well. Everything works except RR window, which needs a regulator. Rear hatch opens with key only. Car comes with extra parts. High flow down pipe, used starter, rebuilt left front caliper, oil filter. It is amazing in the snow. Both have a 100 mm (3.9 in) longer wheelbase and length than the standard B5 Passat. An updated version called the Passat Lingyu was released in late November 2005, which has the 1.8-litre turbocharged EA113, the 2.0 L EA113, and the 2.8 L BBG V6 petrol engines. The E trim level had a 1.6 L 102 PS (75 kW ) engine only. The S trim level was considered well-equipped by the motoring press at the time, and What Car.SE models had the same engines as the S version, but were better equipped. A base model was also available. The W8 was only available with the 4motion four-wheel-drive system and a slightly higher trim than the GLX models. The V6 engine had 4motion as an option, as did the 1.8 T starting in the 2004 model year. The GLX trim was only sold with the V6.Retrieved 30 December 2009. It's either (a) the possession of shiny bits is a primeval indicator of wealth--the wherewithal to have something that's taken time to work, buff, and polish--or (b) despite oversize frontal lobes, opposable thumbs, and fancy bipedal motivation, we are simpletons. There are 28 new glinting strips of trim; the previous Passat was unadorned. These include eight separate chrome caps for the leading edges on the front-grille crossmembers, four chrome strips that surround the glass on each side of the car (a distinctly Audilike touch), and the chrome-accented rub strips. All this auto jewelry can be read as a baby step on VW honcho Ferdinand Pi'ch's quest to bring the people's car to an entirely different class of people. But it's a long way from Golfs and Jettas to Mercedes and Ferrari fighters. Enter the Passat--again. The introduction of the 1998 Passat heralded a change for VWs as attractive, hip rides for the young. The biggest single jump in Passat status will come this fall when VW offers its first eight-cylinder engine in the 271-hp W8, which will come standard with all-wheel drive. In addition to the snazzy chrome trim, Volkswagen says all but the roof panel and the door skins is new, although you'd be hard pressed to notice a difference. The most noticeable change is the front fascia. Gone is the simple, unadorned nose of the 1998-2001 model. In an effort to make it look less proletarian, VW has fashioned the Passat's front into a slicker, if droopier, schnoz. The new nose doesn't match the rest of the car in the way that the original did, but it does give the new Passat a decidedly more Audilike look. The rear-end styling has, likewise, been complicated by fussy-looking new taillights. It will take an even closer inspection to notice that the body-panel gaps are slightly tighter and more consistent than on the previous Passat. That's impressive considering the 2001 Passat's fit was excellent. The tighter tolerances are a byproduct of a stiffer body shell. The overall structure of the Passat is 10 percent stiffer torsionally, owing to heavier-duty reinforcements around the passenger cabin as well as stiffer longitudinal structural members and more liberal use of laser welding. Ten percent may not sound like much, but remember that the Passat, based on the Audi A4 platform, wasn't exactly a wet noodle to begin with. Drivers are not likely to notice a difference in the car's character. There's a little more ride compliance perhaps, but again we're talking baby steps here. Volkswagen has left the soft, family-friendly suspension tuning unchanged from the previous Passat. The new car dives, squats, and rolls more than would a sports sedan. The body bobs over undulations in the road. The payoff for less-than-taut tuning is a nice, smooth ride--a higher priority for most mid-size-sedan buyers. Only a slight engine vibration through the steering wheel separates this car from feeling like a full-on luxury ride. The familiar 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder makes 20 more horsepower, thanks to increased turbo boost (10.2 psi rather than 8.4). That additional power combined with the shorter (numerically higher) gears for first through third in the standard five-speed manual is good for a half-second drop in the Passat GLS's 0-to-60 time. Our test car, equipped with the five-speed, hit 60 mph in 7.5 seconds. That bests four-cylinder mid-size competitors by two to three seconds and is roughly equal to competitors with V-6s and automatic powertrains. This despite a weight gain of about 150 pounds to a still-reasonable-for-the-class 3238. Torque steer is nonexistent. Chalk one up for the Audi-sourced multilink front suspension. More important--in the world outside the test track--is the 11 more pound-feet of torque the higher-boost turbo provides. Before the turbo starts spinning in earnest, the little 1.8-liter has its work cut out for it. Once the turbo segues into the power-delivery business, though, the GLS moves out with authority. So much so, in fact, that we wonder why anyone would pay the extra money for the optional 190-hp, 2.8-liter V-6. Also largely unchanged is the interior, which is fine by us. The '98 Passat set a new standard in the segment for materials quality and lovely little touches such as soft-return grab handles and heated seats. There are more baby steps along the upmarket trek for the interior. VW replaced the utterly useless, flimsy swing-out cup holders for two proper holes in the new center console. (Rejoice!) There are new bezels around the four analog gauges. They are, of course, shiny. Otherwise, the interior remains the same as always, with supportive seats, an elegant design, and roomy rear quarters. Passats--and VW in general--are only going up in prestige and price from here. That reflection you see.The Passat, as well as the Jetta and the Golf, is our only glimpse into another universe of inexpensive but delicious Continental vehicles that our federal regulations and devotion to the porcine have conspired to deny us.While there, it would learn (via flash upgrade) how to huff up another 4.5 psi of turbo boost, good for another 40 horses and 69 pound-feet of metal motivation. With that kind of scoot on tap, there'd be little need to argue about whether or not the additional chrome trim has an emasculating effect (it most definitely doesn't!). Cup holders are one of my pet peeves because many of them are poorly designed and are put in places where they get in the way of elbows or dash controls. That's not the case in this Passat, where they are molded down low in the center console between the front seats. They are easily accessible but are not in the way when you're shifting gears, and the spring-loaded fingers in them securely hold a variety of containers both large and small. Cheers to VW for its sporty family sedan with cup holders that work! You may be able to find more information about this and similar content at piano.io. For other uses, see Passat (disambiguation). It has been marketed variously as the Dasher, Santana, Quantum, Magotan, Corsar and Carat. The successive generations of the Passat carry the Volkswagen internal designations B1, B2, etc. The Passat NMS is sold in the North American, South Korean, Chinese, and Middle Eastern markets.Externally all four shared styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The first generation Passat was a fastback variant of the mechanically identical Audi 80 sedan, introduced a year earlier. A five-door station wagon was introduced in 1974, which in North American markets was sold as an Audi Fox. In Europe, the Passat was equipped with two rectangular, two round 7-inch, or four round 5.5-inch headlights depending on specification. The Passat was one of the most modern European family cars at the time, and was intended as a replacement for the ageing Volkswagen Type 3 and Type 4. The only other European cars of its size to feature front-wheel drive and a hatchback were the Renault 16 and Austin Maxi.In July 1978, the Passat Diesel became available, equipped with the VW Golf 's 1.5-litre diesel (50 PS (37 kW; 49 hp)), followed in February 1979 by the Passat GLI with a fuel-injected version of the 1.6-litre engine. The three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and a station wagon model launched in North America for and during the 1974 model year. Sole available engine was a carburetted 1.5-litre inline-four developing 75 hp (56 kW) (or 70 hp (52 kW) in 1975), supplanted from model year 1976 by a Bosch fuel-injected 1.6-litre four 78 hp (58 kW). North American cars were equipped with single DOT standard headlights. All gasoline engines were dropped for North America in 1981, in preparation for the next generation.Since the Audi 80 was not marketed in Brazil, the Passat received the Audi's different front-end treatment after a facelift for 1979. Originally with a 1.5-litre engine, during its long life cycle many improvements from the B2 platform were later introduced, like its 1.6 and 1.8-litre engines, a Brazil-specific face-lift in 1985, and a five-speed gearbox. A sports version, named Passat TS 1.6 and later Passat GTS 1.8 Pointer was also introduced. The platform, named B2, was once again based on the corresponding version of the Audi 80, which had been launched in 1978. The B2 Passat was slightly longer. The four-wheel drive Syncro wagon version was introduced in October 1984, initially only with the more powerful five-cylinder engine. In Mexico, it was marketed from 1984 to 1988 as VW Corsar and Corsar Variant (the 4-door saloon and 5-door wagon, respectively). In Argentina, from 1987 to 1991 as the VW Carat. In Brazil, the wagon model was badged VW Quantum.
