The 2nd edition concludes with a new chapter titled “Subsurface Heat Flow and Geothermal Energy.” Fitts relates groundwater flow with heat flow and gives a broad overview of topics such as modeling heat flow, the geothermal gradient, interpreting shallow temperature profiles, hydrothermal systems, and geothermal energy. Book improvements include a list of key terms and table of contents at the beginning of every chapter; both list page numbers for easy reference. Examples in the text are now clearly marked, making for easier reading. Additionally, examples and problems that were in English units now include the SI units in parentheses. Overall, the 2nd edition has improved organization, slightly larger font size, clearer figures, higher quality binding, and the use of color to offset examples and lists within the chapters. Finally, the website contains a variety of material grouped by chapter. The examples provided are excellent, with the simple steps of running the model and displaying results. However, there is a bit of a learning curve in order to create new simulations. Additionally, the website contains pdf files of several U.S. Geological Survey reports and videos. The majority of the videos are links to YouTube videos of varying quality that include examples of drilling methods, borehole flow, springs, liquefaction, geysers, and animations of groundwater flow and contaminant transport simulations. Fitts' book is excellently written for use in an introductory groundwater course, particularly at the undergraduate level. Groundwater Science has the benefit of an author with an engineering background; although the main focus is on shallow groundwater, Fitts includes examples and discussion of deeper fluid flow such as oil and gas. This allows students to consider topics from a different perspective and understand that although the environments and physical properties may differ slightly, the general processes and methods for determining parameters or flow are the same.Let us know here.
