She's quite the beast, both in sound and function. My background is in guitar, and this is my first excursion into organ-land. Hammonds have been a passion of mine for a long time, and I'm really excited to finally own one. Unfortunately, this Hammond didn't come perfect. I had a technician come over yesterday, who oiled the organ and fixed the capillary mechanism for oiling the start and run motors. The percussion was also not producing any sound, but a quick 6C4 tube replacement remedied that. The percussion still doesn't decay however, which is strange. The main problem on the organ is the lower manual, whose volume is much, much lower than the upper manual. The upper manual sounds massive and thick like a Hammond should, but the lower manual is thin, quiet, and anemic. Additionally, there is no percussion on the lower manual either. The technician said it is probably an issue with the matching transformer, but I'd like to rule out all possible issues before I go replace the matching transformer. Does anybody have any ideas as to how to get this thing up to snuff. Thanks guys!I too recently picked up a Hammond M-3. The one issue you mentioned that I can comment on is the percussion. It is only available on the upper manual. There is a publication from Hammond called Hammond Organ Percussion Controls that explains how the percussion feature works on Hammond organs. The organ I picked up had this booklet with several original manuals.As for the lower manual sound vs. This is the same for every spinet. Only the consoles have the full set of drawbars for both manuals. Likewise though the lower manual has a mixture drawbar above the 1' drawbar. Regarding the manuals, I set them the same as you said and there is still a big volume drop. I measured it last night with a dB meter just to confirm my suspicions, and I was right. On the upper manual, I was measuring about 80 dB a foot away from the speaker. On the same note on the lower manual, I was getting only 55 dB. A 25 dB difference is pretty big, and it doesn't seem like it would be the way it was set from the factory. How should I go about troubleshooting this issue? Thanks!HEY - try flipping the vibrato switches. Are they set the same for both manuals. The switches and the matching transformer are the only thing I can think of that's different between the two manuals. Or should I zap them. I've heard that zapping can cause some other serious issues, but I think an 18v zap can't really damage anything. I'm not the expert on it, but the same technician (whom I trust less and less) told me that zapping can cause major problems, and it only works for a few months before the whiskers grow back.The culprit was a capacitor in the Vibrato switchbox. How To Recover Your Username and Password They are NOS and are in perfect condition, one is the organ manual itself and it explains in step by step directions in 48 pages how to operate and manipulate every single switch and button on the organ and it even gives sample song bars to see what each lever can do, this Aurora is a very complicated machine that does even more then I thought, but once you know what everything does it becomes a simple to operate machine. The second book is actually book one for the composer series of organs of which the Aurora is one, it contains a complete set of keyboard guides for each keyboard as well as one for the pedals, they are rather a heavy white material that has to be punched out and placed on the keys, there is also a how to read music lesson refresher plan and around 30 songs in this book with instructions how to set the registrations on the organ for each one. Each song is just a tad more then the one before.Have fun discovering what the organ can do, which is a lot. Just one point. As far as I recall, the Aurora Classic is not actually one of the Composer series, they didn't arrive on the scene until a little later, and the top model was the 146xxx. Blue Book actually puts the Classics in their own small series - just three models - and Jan's Master List also shows the Classics as a set on their own. But, I found this little thing all by itself, and my MDS 41S needed a new little friend, and so it goes. Just now, trying to learn a little about it. I have found the reverb to be inop. Will check tubes. Was also aware that some disconnect the line in to keep it from interfering with leslies. Did that come directly from the main speaker, or from the main amp. A little static on some keys when depressed. Did they make self cleaning contacts back then? Smile. Not sure what all the percussion stops are suppose to do. Short and long attack seem to do nothing. The jazz players who embraced the Hammond Organ, however, found the click to be a percussive highlight, and wanted nothing to do with its eradication. The Sk series allows you to adjust the intensity of the key ON click, and the key OFF click. The timbre of the click may also be adjusted. Mr. Hammond would have greatly approved of the Sk, as you can turn the click all the way off if you desire, creating a Vintage Hammond Organ that could not exist in the physical world. The inclusion of this obscure feature demonstrates the commitment to authenticity Hammond has brought to the Sk Series. That this control's presence and location were obscured goes a long way in explaining why there was such a variation in sound among Hammonds.It is difficult to think of one without the other, although Mr. Hammond never allowed Hammond Dealers to sell Leslie Speakers. After Mr. Hammond's death, the two companies became partners, and now Hammond owns and manufactures Leslie Speakers. For both Hammond and Leslie, the golden goal was to produce a Leslie that did not require motor-driven speakers, and the goal has been reached in the Sk series, with the finest Digital Leslie we have ever produced. Now the elusive effect can be had where space and mobility have heretofore denied it.
