The talk of Rainsford and Whitney turns to the hunt, and it is this conversation between the two men about what the jaguar does or does not feel while being stalked that lies at the heart of this tale. Shots are fired, and in an effort to discover what is happening on deck, Sanger falls overboard, making a harrowing escape to said island. There he discovers not madness, but the ultimate extension of himself. The “hunt” is tremendously exciting, the brevity of the story creating great movement in the narrative. Sanger, General Zaroff, and his towering right-hand man, Ivan, are memorable in this thrilling tale of adventure which also ponders larger questions. Connell was perhaps most successful at the short story, a slew of them published in The Saturday Evening Post and Collier’s. But he was also a journalist and screenwriter. Though Robert Riskin wrote the screenplay for Frank Capra’s wonderful film, Meet John Doe, the original film treatment was written by Connell and Robert Presell, who received an Academy Award nomination for it. Despite its age, this tale feels timeless, and is near perfect. On the technical side, there are a few typos in the transfer to Kindle, but rare, so not too distracting. Epic and all I still feel bothered by the beginning. There is another hunter, Rainsford, travelling to South America to hunt jaguars, he falls from the yacht and barely gets to swim to an island where he finds a castle and inside is enough for him to utter his name to be acknowledged and even his books already having been read by the aristocratic host.It's implausible and distorts a bit what otherwise is a perfect story. The AmazonClassics Edition is wonderful, I read this year is the first in which this amazing tale entered public domain, which is the criteria to be in the AmazonClassics series. It has been professionally formatted for Kindle, the typography is modern which makes a comfortable reading. There are not introductions nor footnotes, which is meaningless thanks to the useful X-Ray function, so the text is as pure as if it had written this morning, a quite recommendable edition.I've never had any issues with downloaded books-but this one was illustrated-but the pics made no sense and it had really weird spacing and not like other books or short stories I have downloaded. My recommendation-if you want to read this short story look for same stories with different publisher. Format made it very hard to read and at times from spacing I felt I didn't have the complete story. Definitely would not recommend for a student that this version would not be a good read for a student to write a book report on. And the pictures where very very weird and totally irrelavent. The turning point in the story comes when Rainsford realises that the General's offer to hunt with him did not involve them hunting prey together and that for the first time in his life he had become the hunted: the human quarry. After an extraordinary ordeal of three days where he is hunted by human and hounds, and his tricks are failing in front of his opponent, he recognises new meanings to the terms terror and fear. It is by jumping into the water and swimming around the island, rather than walking it, that he survives but instead of hiding he decides to finish the game. Zaroff takes his guard down believing Rainsford to be dead and is surprised to find the latter in his room. He, in keeping with the verbal contract which stated that if the quarry survives after three days he gets to leave the island, believes Rainsford just wants to leave and congratulates him. One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. Rainsford becomes a murderer much like Zaroff which is what he believed he never could become. In a way, his extreme experience changes his outlook and as much as he doesn't mention it in so many words, his action in turning into a murderer from a hunter reveals it all. There is also a slight possibility that he has developed a taste for human quarry much like his nemesis.They are always looking for new challenges, the same kind of animal quarry doesn't quench their quest for adventure and thrill for long. The difference is that Rainsford's passion takes him to distant lands, for instance at the beginning of the story he is going to the Amazon jungles to hunt jaguars, and Zaroff's passion leads him to hunting human game. Rainsford is disgusted by Zaroff and calls him a murderer but for Zaroff there is a thin line between a murderer and a hunter. This is ironic because at the end of the story he does the exact opposite of what he espouses. His experience in the forest where he had inadvertently become Zaroff's quarry makes him turn the tables on his hunter when he has the chance. In effect, Rainsford ends up doing what his opponent believed human beings should do: kill to live. Rainsford's survival is ensued by the annihilation of his nemesis and he makes sure of that even if it makes him a murderer.It is in lines 473-484 that the turning point in the story comes when the celebrated American hunter Sanger Rainsford realises that his host General Zaroff planned to hunt him as human quarry. Up until that point, he had believed the General's offer to hunt involved them being hunting allies in the latter's island. It builds the suspense in the reader's mind as they wonder what kind of danger lurks beneath the surface that the protagonist Rainsford is going to encounter. General Zaroff is set up as his nemesis from the very beginning and Connell spends a lot of time in showing the similarities and differences between the two hunters. The conversations between the two men, which form a bulk of the story, is an important prelude to what happens. With his reasoning (the traps he builds to survive and kill), strength (he swims around the island) and cunning (pretends to commit suicide, surprises Zaroff in his room) he manages to outlive his opponent. By allowing his characters to express their opposing viewpoints and creating an eerie atmosphere, Connell gives us a sense of the dangerous game that is to follow as well as question our pre-established notions and ideas about hunting and murder, civilisation and barbarism.It also foreshadows Rainsford's own experience as he soon ends up there after his unfortunate fall overboard the yacht. When Rainsford first lands on the island and walks towards the gothic chateau, he notices the blood in the trees laden pathways, the shell casings from gun shots, the bloodthirsty hounds which again foreshadow the events that are to follow soon after. By creating an eerie ambience, the readers are given a glimpse into the kind of danger that lurks beneath the surface that the protagonist Rainsford is going to encounter. This action of the General soon, however, makes more sense as he was not noticing Rainsford as a guest but studying him as a future quarry and as any good hunter knows- observation is as important as patience and strength in hunting. He tracks Rainsford easily but wanting to enjoy the thrill of the chase prolongs the game. Even when he hurts his shoulder or when Ivan dies, he is in no hurry to end the game. He is patient, and observant throughout the game. It is only when he sees Rainsford jump into the water that he lets his guard down. He is disappointed that by committing suicide the American quit the game before it ended. What he underestimates is man's cunning which is ironic as that is what he believed made hunting men inordinately more fun than animals. By swimming around the island instead of walking in it, Rainsford eludes Zaroff's gun and his hounds. He returns to his hunter and surprises him in his room. Zaroff, in keeping with the verbal contract which stated that if the quarry survives after three days he gets to leave the island, believes Rainsford just wants to leave and congratulates him. However, he again misreads the situation. Unlike other animals, who run when they get the chance to escape, human beings possess reason and revenge is a product of that very reasoning power of the human mind. Rainsford, after his excruciating ordeal as human quarry, has no sympathy for this man. The narrator informs us in the last lines that Rainsford had never slept on a better bed. When talking about ethical decisions, in these two short stories The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell and Barn Burning by William Faulkner; the two characters Rainsford and Sarty will end up making choices that we will determine whether ethical or unethical. Toward the finish of the story Rainsford is happy with the death of Zaroff because he can never again worry for his survival and is compensated with an agreeable bed and land to call his own. Even though he may be relaxed and stress free he will always have to live with the conscious of killing those individuals who were embarked to slaughter him. Instead of just killing himself General Zaroff instead of those other individuals that were told by General Zaroff to kill him. The ethical decision that Rainsford should have done was to go to the higher authorities and let them handle it. That would have been a lot easier and a lot of less people being killed. At the point when Rainsford first discovered them for progress he would not help him in any capacity so General Zaroff took him in and acquainted him with everybody. Rainsford held resentment in the back of his brain until the time came. While being chased by these two men. Taking out Ivan was a simple errand and help since he wasn’t as experienced in the amusement chasing people as Zaroff seemed to be. After taking out Ivan. Rainsford could then concentrate on the greater danger who is known for chasing man and who likewise had a pack of chasing hounds. Indeed, self-protection is valid. I concur with what Rainsford did. As a wild creature which he is delineated as cornered and had nothing left to do other than bouncing or biting the dust. He took the most dangerous choice and went for the act of pure trust seeking after the best as he did. Rainsford made up for himself by hopping off the bluff and shockingly enduring it. He then later returned for vengeance guaranteeing his position of authority. Secondly, in the story Barn Burning, Sarty Snopes and his family sees that the barn they were living in for four days had been in flames. His dad Abner Snopes is the bad person who started the fire. So, when they noticed the barn was in flames he tries and get everyone together and he tries to make sure Sarty especially because he is worried Sarty would tell and ruin what he was doing. Well right before Sarty was held and not capable of telling he got away to warn the owner of the barn that his barn was in flames. I believe he had made the right ethical decision by warning Major de Spain. Although the consequences were wrong with his dad dying he h made the right ethical choice. If Sarty had not warned the owner of the barn about the barn and stuff I believe he would have shared the guilt and eventually then throw his dad under the bus and say his dad was the one who cause the burning barns. The only thing I believe Sarty could have done differently so his father would still be alive is that he could have put out the fire himself instead of telling Major de Spain. Additionally, regardless of how much love he had for his father there is no reason why Sarty should fell guilty because ethically that was the right decision. Throughout the story Sarty keeps his mouth shut about what his father was doing because of the love and stuff for his dad. Abner had kept telling Sarty throughout the story that he was becoming a man and that right there had another piece that made Sarty be a man and tell Major about what Abner was doing to the barn. Although Abner is ethically wrong for burning the barn there is a little responsibility that the Major should take. Abner is not just doing this for fun and games he is doing it with a purpose to get his message across that a man shouldn’t be rich because of the sweat of a poor man. So now when Abner burned the major’s barn, the major now must explain the death of a veteran with no proof that he burned his barn. The major could have sat down and spoke to the family about what happened instead of taking fatal shots. But he just listens to the warning of Sarty and fired his gun and killed Sarty’s dad. In conclusion, in both short stories The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell and Barn Burning by William Faulkner I believe the characters Rainford and Sarty were both ethically right with what they did. But Rainsford could have done it a whole lot different. Because I believe it not right to just murder and get away with it, but these people were coming after him so by all means I believe it was kind of a self-defense type thing. He had to overcome the love and bond he had with his dad to be able to tell the major about what his dad was doing and that takes a lot of courage to do. A single person must survive the game to hunt or be the prey of a murderer for falling into a trap. In Richard Connell’s short adventurous story, “The Most Dangerous Game”, a main character named Sanger Rainsford is a hunter that is put into a scary situation that makes him go through intense moments during the story. This story had shown that it was an intense and daring story to read because of how everything was stated and explained. It starts off by, Rainsford had jumped overboard from a ship and started to swim. He had swam towards the gunshots he heard from an island and decided to go towards it. After swimming, he had ran into General Zaroff who already knew him from his own book. Zaroff tells him about his hunting story and how he had hunted so many wild animals it became boring. General Zaroff and Sanger Rainsford are both skilled and intelligent but they also have something different and that is that Zaroff is insane while Rainsford is sane. First of all, in this story, the two men shared the same trait and that is being skilled. Rainsford showed that he is skilled he was able to set a trap where he knew Zaroff was going to be. This reveals that even when he is fighting for his life, he is not giving up to fighting back. In order to fight back, Rainsford called to mind, “I’ll give him a trail to follow” (Connell 19). This states that he has a trick up his sleeve and thinks this is going to work even when trying to defend himself from Zaroff. In addition, Rainsford knows he will be at that specific spot, so he waits for the right time to attack. How Zaroff proved that he is skilled is how he knows everything and how he thinks killing animals is boring. How he showed how he knew something was up, “He paused, almost beneath the tree, dropped to his knees and studied the ground” (Connell 18). This shares that, he knows what is going on around him and knows his surroundings because this has happened before. Furthermore, Zaroff expects everything and his skill help him hunt things like wild animals. Secondarily, in this story, they both showed that they are both intelligent. Rainsford displays how intelligent he is by how he could get away from Zaroff and has everything is already played in his mind. “Even so zealous a hunter as General Zaroff could not trace him there, he told himself, only the devil himself could follow that complicated trail through the jungle after dark” (Connell 18).
