I got this book and was excited to learn the ins and outs (just the basics are fine) of the process of screenwriting. Instead, I found that this book provides more of a layout of different character tropes and how to create them. I don't have trouble with characters. I don't think that this book should be about creating believable characters, I think it should be about writing a screenplay. SO, I was disappointed. I want to know how to write a screenplay, not how to write a character.It's stressful, mind numbing work that takes a lot out of you and leaves you feeling like you've run through an automatic car naked and in slow motion. I have focused mostly on writing short fiction and have never gotten into screenplays because I did not know how. When I came across this book, I had to check it out. The price was right, for sure. I'm glad I did. Everything I needed to know about getting started as a screenwriter is here. It follows the writing process from the beginning outline to the final scene making sure to cover creating your hero, villain, supporting characters and setting up plot devices. Like a transition, there's rarely a time when a spec screenwriter should insert shot directions. Once again, that's the director's job. Spec scripts should stick stringently to established screenwriting rules. This is a version of the screenplay created for film production. It will include technical instructions, like film editing notes, shots, cuts and the like. All the scenes are numbered, and revisions are marked with a color-coded system. This is done so that the production assistants and director can then arrange the order in which the scenes will be shot for the most efficient use of stage, cast, and location resources. The biggest mistake any new screenwriter can make is to submit a script full of production language, including camera angles and editing transitions. It can be very difficult to resist putting this type of language in your script. After all, it's your story and you see it in a very specific way. However, facts are facts. If you want to direct your script, then try to go the independent filmmaker route. But if you want to sell your script, then stick to the accepted spec screenplay format. Programs like Final Draft and Movie Magic Screenwriter put your words into proper screenplay format as you type, letting you focus on a well-told story rather than the chore of margins and spacing. Popular story development software includes Dramatica Pro, a step-by-step guide to the storytelling process, Contour, a character-based structuring system, and Save the Cat!, a program centered on successful screenwriter Blake Snyder’s own proven methods. The first page is the title page, which should also be written in Courier 12pt font. No graphics, no fancy pictures, only the title of your script, with “written by” and your name in the center of the page. In the lower left-hand or right-hand corner, enter your contact information. In the lower left-hand or right-hand corner you can put Registered, WGA or a copyright notification, though this is generally not a requirement. The front and back covers remain blank. They are just there to protect your script. And remember: pictures and text on script covers scream amateur. Do NOT put a fastener in the middle hole. If you’ve done the hard work of structuring your story in your outline, this should be easy. Final Draft is the industry standard, but Scrivener, which is what I use to write books, has helpful screenwriting tools, too. If this is your final draft, don’t forget to add a title page and double check all other screenwriting formatting musts. Keep in mind, most production companies don’t take unsolicited scripts, and if this is the case, you’ll need an agent. This line is in ALL CAPS. They are as descriptive as possible but short, focusing on the action occurring and visuals. Every time a different character speaks, we will see a new name above the dialogue. These will be marked with an extension that indicates the same character is continuing to talk (see extensions below). It’s a process I have used successfully for years now. You’d be surprised at how cooperative and willing to share people are. Lawyers, cops, doctors, journalists, and any professional who can educate you about the settings and characters you’re writing about.World building is an easy and fun process, so take as much time as you want and have fun with it. Put some real thought and creativity into designing your world, and I assure you, your script will benefit from it. But, even if you write current time drama or comedy, you still have some world building to do. Imagine the world in which you want your story to take place. Picture it as vividly and with as many details as you can. For example, what kind of technology is available in your world. Is it more advanced than our technology. How do people there communicate with each other. Phone? Letters? Crows? Telepathy? How are nature and the climate there. And how does that affect the politics, economics, and architecture. Is it a religious place. If so, what religion. Is it a religion we know or a religion you created. What is the history of the world. I don’t need any world building, right? Wrong. Think how different is “Girls” NY, vs “Law and Order” NY, vs “Sex and the city” NY. How is NY in your show. Glossy? Dangerous? You get the picture. Exercise Write a 1-3 paragraphs about your world. Consider all these elements In order to do that, you need to ask yourself, and answer, in writing: Who is the main character. What do they want? What prevents them from getting it. The answers to these questions are your compass. They will guide you on how to build the plot and what obstacles to put in your character’s way. Another benefit of answering these questions is you’ll know what choices and decisions your character will make when facing a dilemma. These answers will change more than once during the work on the script, and that’s fine. It’s more than fine; it’s the way it should be. Or at least for another 3-4 characters. Conflict is drama. But you need to start somewhere, and this is the purpose of these questions. If you want to dive deeper into character design check out this workshop. A Synopsis is the essence of the story, told in the order the audience will be watching it. Write the major plot points. The inciting incident HAS to have a significant effect on the hero. The hero will have to rise to the occasion and find new inner strength. Stakes are higher. The hero has one last shot at redemption. The hero succeeds or fails in an irreversible way. (In a TV episode, that may not be the case). Please note: Screenwriting is not plug and play. There are no formulas. But there elements, like structure, that have worked many times in the past and can help us write better scripts. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to write a treatment.Make a conscious use of each and every one of them: Where does the scene takes place. When does the scene takes place. Who is the scene, and why. Dialogue Action Props (Objects used by the characters) Transitions between scenes If you want to dive deeper into scene writing, check out this 30 minute training. In the scene writing essential training you’ll learn dialogue do’s and don’ts. In real life, people usually do not say what they want to say directly. Most times, the first draft is full of subtext, and you can easily fix it in later drafts. Example: What is the subtext is this beautiful scene from “Good Will Hunting”? No one will read a script that is not in format. 2) The format allows you to know, roughly, how long (in minutes) the script is. 3) Why not? Here is the best and easiest format guide. This is true for every profession and certainly for screenwriting—both for the writing itself and for being confident in meetings and with colleagues. Watch this video, and in 16 min you’ll know all the screenwriting terms. Part of the problem comes from the fact that there are quite a few terms in script-writing that were coined in ancient Greece. For example, Plato coined the term “protagonist” in his book Poetics, and since then, there have been generations of play-writers, writers and screenwriters who felt badly for not knowing what it means. It’s time to clear the smoke over these terms that confuse us all. The work of the screenwriter is to choose what, how and in what order the story will be told. The writer chooses where to start, finish and what to show in the character’s life. In other words, how to tell the story so it will be interesting. Sometimes, it means adding elements that are not part of the plot, in the sense that we could get them out and the story will still be understood. And that’s fine, it’s the writer’s choice. These elements add style and tone, and they are important to the quality of the work even if don’t advance the plot. The plot is how to tell the story. It sounds so complex and sophisticated, as though it is from the engineering world describing something full of layers and small, moving parts. I felt this whole structure-thing was something I could never fully understand. But you know what? It turns out “structure” is just the order of events that build the plot. For the most part, but not always, the hero is also the protagonist. For example, in Whiplash, Andrew’s motivation is to be “one of the greatest” drummers ever. In fact, in a TV series, it is very common to have multiple protagonists. Or, a conscious desire clashes with an unconscious desire. This blog will walk through some of the ins and outs of the screenplay format, why it’s important, and how to write a screenplay. Writing with proper formatting also gives your script legitimacy, and it lets people reading it know that you know what you’re doing. The first thing that separates scripts from other writing is the screenplay font. Scripts are always written in Courier New font. The title page is very important to the professionalism of your script.Every screenplay starts with FADE IN: and then an extremely sparse description of the scene. Like OFFICE, PARK, GARAGE. Establish this with either DAY or NIGHT. With just three words the scene is set in proper screenwriting format. A screenplay format example of this might look like. It’s fairly easy to find free screenplays of your favorite movies, like the Pulp Fiction screenplay, online. By reading and becoming familiar with the formatting it will be easier to write. In other blogs, we’ve talked about the disadvantages of formatting. When writing dialogue specifically, each new line of dialogue gets its own new line on the page. And with ample white space, the page looks relatively clean, and it’s easy to read. This is another metric studios use to sort through scripts. This will get your script tossed in any screenwriting competition. The screenplay font, Courier New, keeps everything looking neat and uniform. The screenplay title page is a long tradition in screenwriting and offers a clean looking introduction to your story. Looking at sample screenplays and screenplay examples can help inspire your ideas and creativity. A treatment is a summary of your story, your characters, their arcs, and which themes you want to address. This plus a tight shooting schedule can be all you need to make a great film. Including Sunset Boulevard, Jaws, and Ironman. Especially, if it’s just you and a small crew, trying to follow a script to the letter might hinder your project instead of helping it. It’s so great to have a crew and cast that you can trust and that has faith in you. This trust is crucial on set because it allows you to take more risks with the story and it allows your crew to feel like they are in good hands. Additionally, sometimes having a script on set can hinder experimentation and improvisation among actors. In this case, the director and producers of this special were not completing online screenwriting courses before this project, instead, they understood that by the nature of the project, a script is not necessary. The most important aspect of experimental film is the idea or concept, once that has been established, production can begin and screenplay competitions or screenplay contests are not usually useful for such projects. With a fully formatted screenplay, this is harder to achieve. Sometimes you might think you need your fully formed script before you can start looking for funding but that’s not true. Sometimes you’re just looking to validate your pitch concept before embarking on a fully-fledged screenplay. Just focus on the meat of your story, what it’s really about, and how you’ll produce it. If your shoot is mostly product shots and non-narrative agency shoots because you’re an ad agency screenplay format is not your concern. Agencies are not concerned with how to end a screenplay, or how to get a screenwriting agent. Screenplay formatting does not lend itself to achieving these goals. With that in mind writing up a script in screenplay format beforehand is impractical. There are often not screenwriting competitions for documentaries for this reason. Documentaries are usually pieced together in editing as the director uses the footage to put together the story they want to tell. Writing with proper formatting also gives your script legitimacy, and it lets people reading it know that you know what you’re doing. Screenwriting software can be a very helpful tool because it can keep your formatting correct as you write. If you’re a student, you’re in luck: Final Draft offers a semester-long free trial, which is a great way to learn the tools and format at a competitive industry level. This post offers some more great free software. Books also have plenty of screenplay examples and excerpt samples from screenplays. You can find some great screenwriting books on Amazon. Especially in quarantine when things are moved largely online, an online screenwriting course could be very beneficial for your writing. Getting feedback from other writers and industry creatives can be very beneficial for your work. Courses can also teach how to write something specific like a screenplay treatment, which is a one-page summary of your script. The Writer’s Guild Foundations has a great list of fellowships for the coming year. Any good screenplay has to start with the title. The screenplay title page is very important to the professionalism of your script.You can also add your copyright information here once you choose to copyright (although that’s a bit of a different blog post). Now that you’re set-up, you’re ready to write with perfect formatting. Every screenplay, even famous ones like the Pulp Fiction screenplay, start with FADE IN: and then a sparse description of the scene. Like OFFICE, PARK, GARAGE. Establish this with a dash—either DAY or NIGHT. If you’re continuing a scene from a different location without interruption in time (such as characters exiting a room, walking into a restaurant, etc.), you can use the word CONTINUOUS. A screenplay format example of this might look like. There are no qualifiers like “she said” in screenplays. Instead, in a script, the line of dialogue is written under the speaker’s name in all caps, as MAX followed below by the line of dialogue. Screenplays also don’t use quotation marks for dialogue. A screenplay submission that is formatted incorrectly and has long blocks of text will not be considered because it is too hard to read. Don’t write more than three or four lines without a line break, as this will be too hard on the reader’s eyes. It will also help the pacing of your script. Reading other screenplays can be very beneficial for writing your own. Think about how many movies end leaving you wanting more. A movie that uses its open ending capabilities purposefully is a test to a good screenplay formatting. Depending on the genre and the type of story you want to tell, you could end your script in the middle of the action by including the words FADE OUT. But ending your script with FADE OUT is imperative, even if you don’t intend on the actual movie “fading out” in the edit (although, this decision is really up to the director), as it signifies to the reader that the story has concluded. You could join a screenwriting fellowship and gain insight from fellow writings while working on your own scripts. Scriptreader Pro put together a list of fellowships for the year. An agent will represent you and your scripts to studios and executives. There is no one right way to become a screenwriter, which is good. Whatever way it can happen for you will be the right way, so get out and get writing. Some of the best resources that you can return to again and again would be a screenwriting book. It can be very beneficial to look at some finished sample screenplays while you’re writing your own. If you don’t mind paying for software, Final Draft is the industry standard and very easy to get the hang of.
