kenmore quiet guard deluxe manualCLM includes long-form articles, events listings, publication reviews,Covering all the species of the northern hemisphere, this new photographic guide provides all the information a birder will need at a glance. Superbly illustrated with colour photography by the author, Shorebirds of the Northern Hemisphere focuses on specific and subspecific separation and on ageing to provide a complete identification resource. All the shorebird species that breed in the northern hemisphere or that occur there as non-breeding birds, including vagrants, are included in Shorebirds of the Northern Hemisphere. For the purposes of Shorebirds of the Northern Hemisphere, the northern hemisphere encompasses the Cape Verde archipelago and most of the Caribbean islands. In all, 135 species are included. In addition to the species accounts, there are chapters on plumages and moults, and on behaviour. Please note: for the American market this title has been published by Princeton University Press under the title Shorebirds of North America, Europe, and Asia: A Photographic Guide (ISBN 9780691142814) Formerly a professor at Imperial College, London, Chandler has been a member of British Birds ' editorial board for more than 20 years. His previous books include North Atlantic Shorebirds (Macmillan). This is an ideal second guide for North American birders since it contains so many potential vagrants from Europe and Asia. Best of all, it's free. Read the rules here. Gulls have been dealt with in two excellent recent volumes, and plovers to phalaropes are already served by Paulson’s Shorebirds of North America and O’Brien et al’s The Shorebird Guide. It is into this market that Richard Chandler’s Shorebirds of the Northern Hemisphere bravely wades. Taxonomically, the guide is arranged in the familiar field guide order, with the requisite generally accepted splits, and each species gets two to six pages of images and information, arranged into identification of juvenile, immature and adult plumages, calls, habitat and distribution, racial variation and similar species. The images here are almost uniformly excellent, most having been taken by the author. They represent a fairly comprehensive selection of all ages, both sexes, and most subspecies. While making the reader aware of the possibility of exceptions, variation and intergrades, two Willet, three Black-tailed Godwit, three Short-billed Dowitcher and 10 Dunlin forms are all well described and illustrated. Separation of the Gallinago snipe species pairs will remain a headache, but helpful advice and information is given for birds in the field and hand.Chandler’s book would be a seminal work by any multiple-author team; the fact that it’s almost entirely the work of one enthusiast is a substantial achievement. Tero 4.0 out of 5 stars I occasionally get to Europe and have some use of it there, but typically will only bring a general Europe guide. All shorebirds plus Jacanas (related) are covered. Descriptions are accurate and text and pictures are tightly packed. It may not be as much detail as a North America guide alone, but certainly is compact enough to carry on trips if you choose to make it your standard shorebird guide. Other books will have more pictures of juveniles. With some species (where they thought it was unnecessary?), juveniles are given just one small picture. If the juvenile Spotted Sandpiper has no spots, that should have been the first part of that text. The picture of it does not show it well as it is partly in shade. Other difficult pairs (Dowitchers) and ID problems are well discussed. Each species is shown with 3-19 good photos, nearly all of them being top quality. The poses are mostly at a profile and are accompanied by in-flight or stretching shots that display the wing and tail patterns. The text ranges from 1-2 pages with 70-80 of it focused on descriptions and identification. The remaining information addresses status, habits, and distribution. I like how the material breaks out descriptions for adult and juvenile plumages as well as for breeding and non-breeding. My favorite text is each note that accompanies a photograph. These notes offer immediately relevant tidbits that are useful when given next to the particular plumage. Thirteen (13) tables are provided throughout the book to help compare details of similar species. It's too bad these useful tables are not noted in the table of contents to more easily find them. Instead, these are orphaned and you must flip through the pages in search of them. Also somewhat odd is the use of a table to compare three races of the Short-billed Dowitcher but none for comparison between the Short and Long-billed. A distribution map showing three colors (breeding, non-breeding, and year round) offer general ranges for the birds. Only the outlines of the continents are used. Due to the global range of many of these birds, the use of a broad map provides little detail. Conflicting slightly with the title of the book, not all northern hemisphere (i.e., north of the equator) species are included. Instead, the author uses a line that follows natural habitat zones. This effectively disregards South America, Africa south of Morocco-to-Egypt, and the East Indies. However, he does include the Three-banded Plover that ranges over central and southern Africa while excluding the Spot-breasted Plover (endemic to Ethiopia) which is found just as far north. This is a very useful book with excellent photos to help identify the shorebirds. I should note the material within does not really offer anything new over other books, but it does offer additional and different photos. I've listed several related books below. 1) Each species is shown with 3-19 good photos, nearly all of them being top quality. Technological advances have enabled business travelers to be tracked by their companies, a trend particularly prevalent in the US and a key feature of Airbnb for Work. In Europe, extra duty of care legislation means that companies have a greater responsibility to make sure their employees are safe when traveling for business. This could be an obstacle for Airbnb’s plan to dominate the European business accommodation market, as their lack of regulation and security becomes a nightmare for travel managers tasked with overseeing duty of care and risk management. While duty of care is important for companies stateside, they tend to focus more on the comfort of their business travelers and the overall experience. But how to balance this with cost efficiency and staying on-policy. According to independent travel research group Phocuswright, millennial business travelers in the US are more likely to book out of channel than in Europe. In Europe, where duty of care and expense control are major factors in travel programs, open channel bookings haven’t caught on as quickly. With one language, currency and market culture, fewer content providers and lots of domestic point-to-point flights in the US, many aspects of business travel are much simpler in the states. In Europe, major players in the international market are on each other’s doorsteps. The UK, France, Germany and Spain are only separated by a short flight and, with many budget airlines offering low cost deals throughout Europe, business travel is inexpensive and convenient. In contrast, a flight from coast to coast in the US takes over six hours. This gives a completely different flavor to the business travel experience, with long-flight considerations a major factor in the US. Europe also has an excellent, low-cost intercontinental rail network, giving business travelers a completely different, less stressful (no airport security lines!) travel option.
