Justin 5.0 out of 5 stars For the most part, many things can been found that way for these VW's, but it can be hard to get more structured methods that have all the necessary oem spec details. Sometimes accuracy of information can be an issue too. So, for me, I reached a point where I needed more to supplement my learning. This is the first Haynes book I've bought, but I've been recommended them before, so I figured I would try it, not expecting much, but for a glovebox reference at least--I bought an 03 gti recently with no book in the glovebox. I was surprised to find that this book is so much more than a glovebox reference. This book has everything you need to know to do any standard repair, keep your maintenance schedule, and never have to take your car in to a shop if you don't want to. And if you do take it to a shop, this book will help you know what's going on, and will give tips on how to prioritize the work you pay to have done--essentially, this book can save you from being taken advantage of. Bottom line; this book is worth it for both the thorough DIY person, as well as for the person just looking to take care of their car with a plan for paying out repairs.But every time I pick up a used car I get the Haynes manual for it. This one was for my son's car. He is not so mechanically inclined but he has used the manual to set up his maintenance schedule and get some repairs done. However thous are easy to find online. I does have good detail on other minor things you might want to do to your call like removing any panels interior or exterior, and preventative maintenance.No writing, cover in great condition, binding not broken, no bent pages.This one is from their American office and is not the same quality as the UK produced manuals. I bought this to cover a 2002 Golf mk4 GTI 1.8 t with the AUM engine but found that some aspects of the car are not dealt with. For example, the wiring diagram is 'typical and differs from the UK car and the VVT system on the AUM engine is not mentioned. Quite Frankly 3.0 out of 5 stars It gives a list, but the list means nothing without a diagram to reference.I'm somewhat mechanically-abled but don't have much experience working on cars and the level was instructions for these two simple procedures was great. I plan to use it for basic maintenance like oil, brake pads, etc but the book does include more complicated tasks like work inside the engine system. The images are pretty low resolution, like something out of an old black and white newspaper, but the number of images and labels on the them make up for it. If that's not enough for you, there are plenty of free videos and forum posts on the internet to supplement this book. I used CarCareKiosk and some youtube videos.No fuse diagram. No dtc code to repair correlation. Not even EPC repair diagnostics which is surprising because it's such a common code when accelerator or cruise control malfunctions. Haines suggests just take it to a shop. The ink is faded so reading the text takes real work but I guess Haynes saves 80 cents for ink. Same issues with photos.My advise is not to buy itOnly gripe is Im tired of seeing pics inside these manuals that are not specific to the car model of which it is covering. Often I see the same pics used in manuals from this company used in other model car manuals. Some of the generic pics look like they are from 1950. All in all not a huge deal however makes the books seem old and outdated. There is a lot to be said about keeping products current especially when paying prices that are current.; )The manual has helpful in the sense of checking the electric diagrams but unfortunately it doesn't tell you the location of this relay, which the technician figured out that it was under the panel.I have a 2007 Jetta Wolfsburg Edition and there as things about my car not mentioned in the book. Photos are mostly dark and some hard to see. Instructions jump around, you have to have patience reading this book and looking for your issue. There are other books out there that are far much better. Try Youtube:-)I have there manual for the older Passat and I has a lot more detail. Find myself having to resort to the internet much more for stuff that should be in the repair manual.But We bought this specific manual for a 2008 Jetta City and found it not as applicable as expected. I believe the manual for 2004 Jetta would be more applicable to the 2008 “City” version. Clarification in manual title and applicability would have been helpful. It seems that the manuals are the same size as they were 20 years ago, yet cars are ten times as complex. I don't know if its possible to be as helpful as they were in the past. I find this manual a bit of an overview for some things. I find my self looking on the internet to find more in depth info on some task. Again more of an issue with limited pages and more technology in cars than ever. Would recommend for those doing own repairs This book shows you everything you need to know about your car with great details However, it does not cover the TDI. Also, there is too much waster material on how to rebuild the motor and making autobody repairs. In reality, how many people are going to pull the engine in their garage and replace the crankshaft or repaint their Jetta. I would like to see more detailed and better instructions on things a homeowner would actually do. And change the title. Because it doesn't cover all Jettas. Haynes used to produce a good manual. Not so much anymore. Save your money and buy a Bentley manual. Helpful book, but not the best for the DIY'er.
