Do not allow a child to stand in front of the SRS front passenger airbag unit or sit on the knees of a front passenger. Do not drive the vehicle while the driver or passenger has items resting on their knees. I n f o r ma t i o n P r o v i d e d b y:. The SRS airbags may malfunction or deploy (inflate) accidentally, causing death or serious injury. Operating conditions when the RSCA OFF indicator is on The curtain shield airbag and seat belt pretensioner will not activate in a vehicle rollover. This system detects the conditions of the front passen- ger seat and activates or deactivates the devices for front passenger. SRS warning light Front passenger’s seat belt reminder light AIR BAG ON indicator light. Failure to do so may cause death or serious injury. Wear the seat belt properly. If a child is too large for a child restraint system, sit the child on a rear seat and use the vehicle’s seat belt. Toyota strongly urges the use of a proper child restraint system that con- forms to the size of the child, installed on the rear seat. According to acci- dent statistics, the child is safer when properly restrained in the rear seat than in the front seat. If it is not secured properly, it may cause death or serious injury to the child in the event of sudden braking, sudden swerving or an accident. Firmly secure child restraints to the rear seats using the LATCH anchors or a seat belt. Attach the top tether strap when installing a child restraint.I n f o r ma t i o n P r o v i d e d b y:. Latch the hooks of the lower straps onto the LATCH anchors tighten the lower straps. If the child restraint has a top tether strap, the top tether strap should be latched. CAUTION When installing a booster seat Do not fully extend the shoulder belt to prevent the belt from going to ALR lock mode. If the child restraint system is not correctly fixed in place, the child or other passengers may be seriously injured or even killed in the event of sudden braking, sudden swerving or an accident. Turn the engine switch off to stop the engine. Have your Toyota dealer perform the bedding down. Do not under any circumstances shift the shift lever to P, R or N (automatic transmission) or R (manual transmission) while the vehicle is moving. Doing so may cause the engine brake to not operate properly and lead to an accident. Do not turn the engine off while driving. The power steering and brake booster systems will not operate properly if the engine is not running. Sudden changes in engine speed, such as engine braking caused by up- shifting or down-shifting, may cause the vehicle to skid, resulting in an accident. If there is a hole or crack caused by corrosion, damage to a joint or abnormal exhaust noise, be sure to have the vehicle inspected and repaired by your Toyota dealer. Failure to do so may allow exhaust gases to enter the vehicle, resulting in death or a serious health hazard. Otherwise, you may accidentally move the shift lever or depress the accelerator pedal, which could cause an accident or fire due to engine overheating. Additionally, if the vehicle is parked in a poorly ventilated area, exhaust gases may collect and enter the vehicle, leading to death or a serious health hazard. The rotor damage can result if the pads are not replaced when needed. Brake function Changes in quantity and quality of oil and fluid used for the engine, trans- mission, transfer (4WD models), differentials, etc. Steering lock release When starting the engine, the engine switch may seem stuck in the LOCK posi- tion. If in an emergency, you must turn the engine off while the vehicle is moving, turn the engine switch only to the ACC position. Always check the sur- rounding area when using this system. The distance and buzzer When a sensor detects an obstacle, the buzzer sounds. Note that sensors may not be able to detect obstacles that are extremely close to the vehicle. Detection range of the sensors Approx. The image is displayed in reverse on the screen. This reversed image is a similar image to the one on the inside rear view mirror. Screen ON mode: Green indicator comes Screen OFF mode: Orange indicator comes on. If the center differential lock indicator does not go off when you shift from HL to H, drive straight ahead while accelerating or decelerating, or drive in reverse. Shift to H after the wheels are out of the ditch or off the slippery or bumpy surface. The four-wheel drive indicator comes on when the H4, N or L4 mode is selected. If you have trouble shifting in cold weather, reduce your speed or stop the vehicle. Stop the slipping or spinning before shifting. For normal driving on dry and hard surface roads, use H2 position. Driving on dry and hard surface roads in H4 or L4 position may cause drive com- ponent oil leakage, seizure, or other problems resulting in an accident. System operation Vehicles with an automatic transmission: Stop the vehicle, shift the shift lever to N and shift the front- wheel drive control lever into L4. Sounds and vibrations caused by the active traction control system A sound may be heard from the engine compartment when the engine is started or just after the vehicle begins to move. The system should be used only when wheel spinning occurs in a ditch or rough surface. Reactivation of the VSC system linked to vehicle speed When the AUTO LSD system is turned on, the VSC system will turn on auto- matically if vehicle speed increases. The rear differential lock system is effective in case one of the rear wheels is spinning. Depress the clutch pedal and shift the four-wheel drive control lever into LL to see if this is sufficient. If this has no effect, additionally use the rear differential lock system. Large steering effort and careful cornering control will be required. Do not lock the rear differential until the wheels have stopped spinning. Never use the switch for normal engine starting. Be sure to follow the starting procedure. Be aware, however, that these systems are supplementary and should not be relied upon too heavily when operating the vehicle. ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) Helps to prevent wheel lock when the brakes are applied suddenly, or if the brakes are applied while driving on a slippery road surface. You may need to turn the system off to enable you to rock the vehicle in order to free it. Turning off TRAC Press the VSC OFF switch to turn off TRAC. Automatic VSC reactivation (2WD models) If only the TRAC system is turned off, VSC OFF and AUTO LSD indicators turn on. Contact your Toyota dealer for further information when replacing tires or wheels. Handling of tires and suspension Using tires with any kind of problem or modifying the suspension will affect the driving assist systems, and may cause the system to malfunction. Therefore, the driver and all passengers should fasten their seat belts whenever the vehicle is moving. Do not take unnecessary risks by driving in dangerous places. Do not grip the steering wheel spokes when driving off-road. Water entering the engine air intake will cause severe engine damage. Water entering the automatic transmission will cause deterioration in shift quality, locking up of your transmission accompanied by vibration, and ulti- mately damage. Consult this manual to determine how this reduces the available cargo and luggage load capacity of your vehicle. Example on your vehicle Cargo capacity Total load capacity. Receptacles containing gasoline Aerosol cans Storage precautions Observe the following precautions. Failing to do so may result in death or serious injury. Do not place cargo or luggage in or on the following locations as the item may get under the clutch, brake or accelerator pedal and prevent the pedals from being depressed properly, block the driver’s vision, or. Even if the total load of occupant’s weight and the cargo load is less than the total load capacity, do not apply the load unevenly. Improper loading may cause deterioration of steering or braking control which may cause death or serious injury. Total load capacity: 1130 lb. (510 kg) Total load capacity means the combined weight of occupants, cargo and luggage. Seating capacity: 5 occupants (Front 2, Rear 3) Seating capacity means the maximum number of occupants whose estimated average weight is 150 lb. Always drive the vehicle in a manner appropri- ate to the prevailing weather conditions. Pre-winter preparations l Use fluids that are appropriate to the prevailing outside tem- peratures. When parking the vehicle Park the vehicle and move the shift lever to P (automatic trans- mission) or to 1 or R (manual transmission) without setting the parking brake. This is because the removal and attachment of snow tires affects the opera- tion of the tire pressure warning valves and transmitters. Toyota warranties do not apply to damage or malfunction caused by towing a trailer for commercial purposes. Weight limits Confirm the total trailer weight, gross vehicle weight, gross axle weight and trailer tongue load are all within the limits. Hitch and tow hitch receiver Hitch Trailer hitch assemblies have different weight capacities estab- lished by the hitch manufacturer. Trailer ball load rating Matches or exceeds the gross trailer weight rating of the trailer. Ball diameter Matches the size of the trailer coupler. Most couplers stamped with the required trailer ball size. Hitches If you wish to install a trailer hitch, your Toyota dealer should be consulted. Use only a hitch that conforms to the total trailer weight requirement. Follow the directions supplied by the hitch manufacturer. Do not install the trailer hitch on the bumper; this may cause body damage.In order to avoid accident, death or serious injury, keep the following in mind when towing: l Before starting out, check the trailer’s light and the vehicle-trailer connections. Compensate by making a larger than normal turning radius.Apply the parking brake firmly, and put the transmission in P (automatic transmission) or in 1 or R (manual transmission). Avoid parking on a slope, but if unavoidable, do so only after performing the following: Apply the brakes and keep them applied.
