I think a combination of the two approaches will benefit my DD. But then I also use the Glencoe Life Science along with many literature based books because of their online resources as well. It begins with a Geograhy handbook to get you ready to understand how to use all the map, diagrams and charts in the book. Then there is a tools for historians section to help you understand how we measure and organize time and how it relates to history. So thirty some pages into the book you get to the first chapter which begins with the geographic map of the area with the places to locate and the people (historical figures) you will meet (perfect timeline pictures) and then the timeline. Each section has using geography skills with all the maps being from National Geographic. I can really see how this will benefit my DD in addition to her SL. I was really worried about the goegraphy component in SL alone. The book also shows where to go to the online resources and incorporates many reading skills like previewing, predictiing, main ideas, and text structure. I also like the critical thinking questions. We've never used a trad text per say (do use Kingfisher, Usborne) but, dd says having it all in one text (full of info) is easier for her to grasp and going to 3-4 different books. LOL! World History: A Human Odyssey is a high school text, and I think the one most referred to here at WTM forums, often used for 3 years, or as AP support. The online helps are ridiculously numerous and there are several editions to the book, so lots of activities to choose from. I'm very pleased that I went this route. I have the Journey Across Time, which is Speilvogel. I chose it because my DD was 9 when we started. It is geared toward middle school. Too many to mention, but I'm struggling to just find and purchase the 1999 Human Odyssey teacher guides, and any other help. I chose World History on a whim, but wouldn't have chosen it if there weren't any online activities. I think it's probably pretty similar to JAT. There is a timeline before each chapter and each sub-chapter. If I needed to finish the book in a year, it would be way too much to process. I imagine it's the same with JAT. These texts just serve as the framework for the rest of our history studies. We add in so many other books that would probably be sufficient on their own. So, why am I spinning my wheels, trying to create a rich program, when it appears this textbook company has got one, all linked up with little videos for every section. Am I making sense? World History is obviously the name of the current Spielvogel textbook, being printed by Glencoe, that, when owned by three (or just 2) publishers previous to Glencoe, was named Human Odyssey. My young'un really liked all the little cues and notes, so he rules. So, now I'm going to get both histories, and we'll see if the total textbook experience is good or if these are just references. His (and my older kids') experiences with textbooks (no longer a dirty word) included the fact that their ps teachers, to be perfectly fair, never had the time to get over much of the book, not exploring the whole resource. So, my 7th-8th grader.can go into these books as in-depth as he wishes, use all the tangential assignments and resources online that we find, and we'll surf along and see if they turn out to be a reference, a spine, or the whole shebang that he operates himself, mainly. What gave me pause was when I saw the Amazon age range on the book I kinda hit the brakes, but I'm going to stand resolute with my decision. I use the www.glencoe.com and in the top left click on your state and subject and click on teacher. They just scroll down to find your books. You can also pick a different state if you want to compare books commonly used. Also, don't forget to looks at things like whether they have Study Central, Spotlight videos are really cool, and in motion animations help with progressions. I'm pretty sure all have the self quizzes. Science ones add virtual labs and BrainPop videos. Okay, ordering this morning, no more pambying around on Amazon trying to save a couple bucks. I was concerned that the text could be too much info, so I thought the guides would pull that together. The Note-Taking Guide she fills out as she's reading a section. There's key vocab, outlines, and some filling out diagrams (Venn and graphic organizers). The Reading Essentials is just comprehension questions after you read a paragraph or two. I probably wouldn't have her use it, but so far I find the questions to be good. I think the Va. volumes are two years later publishing.the helping sites only offered one extra item: a document and people timeline that is interactive (pops open when you want to dig deeper) that was kinda neat. The second extra added to Virginia simply seemed to lead to cross-referencing with SOLs, one of the primary reasons I am hsing. It may bog my son down, but I'm hoping he'll explore it a lot, one of the reasons I'm getting the younger material, hoping my reasoning is sound. I am amazed at the amount of info out there, for free. Which guides are worth purchasing. How about the activity workbook TE. I haaaate ordering something that sounds essential and it turns out to be repeated elsewhere.if the wraparound TE has all the answers, that's enough. But if that is just obvious stuff, and the individual answer booklets are more useful, I can do that instead. Or do I need it all. Help. My timing is so off, but I am not going to sync with the public school year, but work with our family rhythms, instead. I have the TE for that too, convenience for me with so many kids. I don't have the TE of the Journey Across Time but do have the activity guide I think it is and the TE for that. I have my SL materials and the SOTW AG and tests so that is enough for me there. I might buy it if I can find it for a good deal used. I like that their science TE contains pacing and lists of all the activies to go with different sections, labs, and lots of additional resources that I have found to come in handy for each chapter. I don't have or need it for anything else. I just have those two guides (Note-Taking, Reading Essentials), and they're pretty simple, even at the high school level.
