The only downside to this is if you leave the lens cap on and the FE set to Auto, in which case the shutter opens indefinitely for a dark time exposure. The motor drive connections just sit out like this. The -3 screens have no notch. You just have to trust it and the meter continues to read the current light. The FE2 is different: its meter needle locks when you press the AEL lever. The advantage to the FE is that if you remember the position of the needle when you hit AEL, it's easy to use the Zone System and see directly how subjects place as you pan around. On either camera you can set a manual speed and the green needle stays put while the black light meter needle shows you your zone placements. If yo know math, you can use this to set automatic exposure bias in sixths of a stop. Forget newer cameras which require you to sit there like a dork holding a cable release while watching a wristwatch and holding a flashlight to see it all. It is way, way superior to any digital Nikon. It will vary by temperature and the amount of light to which the FE was exposed a little while before you started the exposure. Remember, the FE is analog, and it's the leakage currents which are defining the long exposure times. The FE calculates even longer times if you stop down your lens! Luckily, the lessened effective exposure with most film gives the darker results we want to make night shots look like night; otherwise night shots would look as bright as day. It stops working before the Nikon FE does, so you get plenty of notice to change them. Spin the shutter dial to M90 to get the mirror back down, and replace the batteries! Even in their blister packs, I can fit three sets (six cells) and not even notice them.http://xo-sound.ru/userfiles/focagem-manual.xml

The batteries last so long that it's unlikely that they'll see much action, just like the condoms I used to carry but never seemed to need. I got years out of a set of either. If you get no battery check light, be sure both cells are loaded correctly. The meter needle shows the ambient light, making it easy to set light ratios. If you set a faster manual speed, the FE fires at the faster speed and only part of your picture will be exposed to the flash. The SB-600 goes to sleep in standby mode, but doesn't wake up when camera comes back on. With the SB-600, use ON, not SBY, mode. To wake it up you must shoot off a frame, after which the SB-22 wakes back up. While the SB-22 is asleep, the FE doesn't know it's there, and will give you a slow shutter speed in Auto; it will not fire the flash and will correctly give no ready light. Additional troubleshooting information here. It was replaced with the Nikon FE2 in 1983.It can use just about every F-mount lens except a few old style fish eyes and G lens without the aperture ring. Works fine with VR lenses but VR is disabled. The replacement model FE2 cannot use the old style non-Ai lens but the original FE can with the use of stop down metering or manual exposure. Also provided is an aperture priority automatic exposure mode which can expose up to 1min. AE lock is also provided but it is hidden on the self timer lever. Push toward the lens for AE lock function. Compatibility with optional motor drives MD-11 and MD-12. Recommended batteries are 2x 1.55v SR44 silver oxide or 1x 3v 2L44, but can still function with basic LR44. A battery check feature is also available. Nikon introduces the compact and moderately priced F-series 35mm film SLRs in 1977 with the launch of the Nikon FM. Built on a compact, yet tough copper-aluminum alloy chassis, the FM started what was to be a robust and long-lived series of small, and compact semi-professional Nikon SLRs, namely the FM, FM2, FE, FE2, FA, and FM3A. The Nikon FE offers both manual exposure and the electronic shooting mode of the day, aperture-priority autoexposure. Just like the FM, the FE turned out to be a good seller as well. The camera is robust and reliable, and it is now acknowledged as one of the finer SLRs of its generation. The FE stayed on the production line until 1983 when it was replaced by the FE2. Hashem reviews his daily 35mm shooter, the Nikon FE. The Nikon FE is a fun and very easy to use advanced enthusiast-level aperture-priority autoexposure 35mm film SLR camera. DoF (depth of field) preview is provided for via a stop-down lever which also acts as stop-down metering for use with non-AI lenses. The FE is capable of doing multiple exposures, comes with a battery check light, and a film memo holder on the film door. Film advance is still crank-and-wind vintage, metering is activated when the film forward crank is pulled out from its rest position. The FE is available both in black and chrome. As normal on the auction sites, the black paint version normally goes for higher bids. Nevertheless, both of these compact bodies (weighs 590 grams) are very robust, feels solid in your hands and will do a lot to help build up your confidence and skill as a film photographer. With proper care and handling these cameras should last forever. To the right of the pentaprism, which houses the hot shoe, are the shutter selector dial, shutter release button, film advance crank, film counter window, and a small lever for multiple exposure control. Setting the shutter speed to 'AUTO' requires you to press a small knob on top of the dial before rotating the dial. Press the knob beside the dial to rotate the film ISO setting, and do the pull-up and turn the outermost ring of the combination dial to adjust doe exposure compensation. The bottom plate has the battery chamber cover, rewind release button, and the coupling and electrical contacts for the motor drive. Options are the Type B and Type E screens. The TTL (through the lens) exposure value calculations are indicated by a pair of pointers, an 'exposure value' pointer which is calibrated against a vertical shutter speed bar located on the left of the screen, and a flat 'Green' pointer which reflects the shutter speed selection itself. A small ADR (Aperture Direct Readout) window is located in the middle of the top frame of the screen, which shows the aperture setting of the lens. Aperture-Priority Auto exposure First, you take care of the first two variables of the 'exposure triangle', by setting the film ISO to that of the film you are using and setting the shutter speed dial to 'AUTO', and you are ready to go. Once you have framed and focused your image, use your creativity to set the lens aperture as you see fit - wide for a shallower depth of field, the opposite for a deeper one, or anywhere in between - and the FE will set the corresponding the shutter-speed for the best exposure automatically. Manual exposure control in the FE is the match needle experience, where you adjust the exposure meter pointer, by varying your lens aperture opening, to align with the 'Green' shutter speed needle. Depending on your priority, you can also preset your lens aperture to a certain opening width, and then use the shutter speed dial to do the needle match to get the optimum exposure reading. Adjusting the exposure pointer needle to a point higher than the shutter speed mark means that you are going for over-exposure (high-key) while doing the opposite means that you are going for an under-exposed (low-key) image. You will still do the match needle experience here, but you do it with the Depth-of-Field preview lever pressed while you adjust either the aperture ring setting or shutter speed setting. I tried to be deft about this, have never been successful, and have always ended this as a two-handed operation. All you need to do to get the shutter cocked for the next shot, without winding the film frame forward, thus enabling you to do multiple exposure shots, is to pull the small tab located under the film advance crank back while cranking the lever itself. Simple. Battery. The Nikon FE uses a pair of SR or LR44 batteries to power the metering system of the camera. A pair of batteries can last you a couple of years even with regular use. The cost here is almost negligible. The batteries, however, will tend to corrode if left in the camera unattended for extended durations. Something to watch out for! The FE has an automatic mirror lockup when used with the self-timer, but not otherwise, and there was a mention somewhere that the FE is ideal for night photography, with its extended metered timing capability. As most Nikons do, the FE is a smooth operator, the shutter speed dial is easy to handle, with safety features like the center button on the shutter speed dial which have to be pressed before you can exit the 'AUTO' mode. The film advance lever is amazingly smooth, and fast with its single-stroke action. On a good unit, metering on the Nikon FE is infallible. This is something you should be wary of when looking for a purchase. Other than that the camera is simply a joy to use and keep. Written by James Baturin When it comes to old 35mm SLR cameras, there are really no shortage of options. But if you’re looking for an SLR with a classic look, lots of lens options, and that makes taking double exposures a breeze, here are a few reasons to consider the Nikon FE. Find the Nikon FE at KEH Camera or on eBay. Features on the Nikon FE As far as features, it really has everything you need for a simple everyday camera with all the benefits of a fully manual system. It’s relatively lightweight and takes up less space than most modern day DSLR cameras (though new mirrorless digital options might be more compact). Related: 5 Great 35mm Film Cameras for Beginners The Light Meter The Nikon FE also features an in-camera reflected light meter, which makes calculating exposures convenient, as you don’t need a handheld meter. The meter reading itself is visible on the left side of the viewfinder as a black needle moving up and down along a scale of the camera’s shutter speeds. A green bar shows the shutter speed the camera is currently set to, and the black needle will move relative to your chosen aperture. I have tried other SLR’s that are roughly equivalent to the Nikon FE (the Canon AE-1 for example), and personally found the light meter system in these less intuitive. It should be noted that the in-camera light meter measures the “reflected light” of a scene and calculates the exposure by averaging the light reflected in the scene. This means that if your scene contains an average range of tones from dark to light, the meter should be relatively accurate. However, if your scene is not balanced (like say a winter scene where most tones are bright white), you may need to compensate by 1 or 2 stops. Double Exposures One of my favorite things about the Nikon FE is how simple it makes doing double exposures. It features a small lever beside the film advance crank for just this purpose. To take a double exposure, simply take your first exposure, hold down the lever and advance the film as normal. The lever prevents the film from actually advancing to the next frame, but still resets the shutter, allowing you to take another exposure over the first. Lenses for the Nikon FE When I was first looking to buy an SLR camera, one of the reasons I went with the Nikon over other brands was the compatibility of its lenses. The Nikon FE features the classic Nikon F mount system, which is still used on many of Nikon’s modern DSLR cameras. That means the SLR lenses can be used on a lot of Nikon DSLR’s as well. You will only be able to manual focus and will lose the in camera light metering, but it’s great to have the option if you shoot digital as well. In addition to compatibility, the Nikon FE has a variety of lens options. The popularity of the brand and camera itself also makes lenses easier to find than other more obscure camera types. My set up includes a 24mm f1.4 wide angle, a 50mm f1.8, and a 105mm f4, which is a good variety for most types of photography. Price of the Nikon FE Like any used film camera, prices range depending on where you buy it, condition of the camera, etc. But no doubt there are better bargains out there, especially if you’re willing to clean it up a bit. The LEDS in the light meter allow extreem low-light photography. I miss Kodachrome 25 and am now experimenting with Fugi slide film for long exposures during night city shots in downtown Chicago. My lenses are all Nikon, including a 50 mm f1.4, 24 mm f2.8, 28 mm f2.8, 80 mm -200 mm f4.5, and 300 mm f4.5. You will pay a little more for a Nikon F2-S, but you will have a little more luck seeing the meter during low light shots. The F2-S meters red l8ghts are easy to read in any light level. My backup Nikon is a 35 mm Nikkormat EL-W. The camera is similar to the Nikon FE. I am retired now, but both of my camerasa have been to the botyom of the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Mongolia and the high County of China and Napal, and the wetlands of India and Viet-Nam Both cameras over the past 36 years have operated flawlessly, although I take good care of them. It is always smart to have a camera which can be used manually and without a battery. Using cameras which are dependent on electronics can be tempermental in wet jungle and rain forests. My pocket 35 mm is an Olympus 35-RC and this camera is usually with me. This camera is about 40 years old and and can be used without a battery if required. I also carry a Nikon P-7000 as my digital camera which I can use in manual mode if required. My training in photigrapht started with my cousin Jim, who wad my mentor. The complete set from Time Life books served as my book source. I started in amature fashion runway photography and later graduated to mediumn format using a 500-CM. I use it on a tripod, but I still use in on night shots in Chicago. As noted earlier, I use the big brothet of the Nikon FE and would not hesitate to use the FE as my backup camera. I hope this information is helpful. Finally, I enjoy each issue of this digital magazine the contributions everyone make. I never really moved to digital, but I do recognize its usefullness, ie: my Nikon P-7000. THANK YOU! DON Leave a Comment Cancel Comment Join us for weekly film photography inspiration and tutorials. To get started finding Nikon Fe Manual, you are right to find our website which has a comprehensive collection of manuals listed. When I was 15, I worked all summer so that I could buy one. There were many competitors, but the Nikon was the best, and most expensive. Canon had the shutter-preferred AE-1, Olympus had the more compact OM-2, and Minolta, Pentax and Konica had automatic models. But the FE was the king. The Nikon FE and Olympus both won in the “feel” category. Canon boasted that their exclusive shutter-priority auto exposure mode made them best for sports photography. But the Nikon FE was IT. The camera was rugged, and you could see both aperture AND shutter speed in the viewfinder. Of course, cameras didn’t have ISO indicators in the viewfinder back then. For one thing, you couldn’t change film speed in the middle of a roll, and for another, we called it ASA, not ISO. When you put film in the camera, you tore off the flap from the cardboard box and slid it into the holder on the camera back. When you finished the roll, you used a knob to wind it back into the cannister, but if you developed your own, you rewound until you heard the click of the film releasing from the takeup sprocket, so that a little piece of film would still stick out of the cartridge. This made it easier to load the film into a tank in the dark. I never thought manual focus was a problem. The viewfinder was extremely bright, and the large split prism made focus very easy to attain. These days, camera talk is all about the sensor: It’s resolution, sensitivity, DR. but with a film camera, you could use any sort of film with the cheapest camera. The pro-level Nikon had some strange features which set it apart: It had a faster motor drive option, and you could replace the entire viewfinder. There was also an optional back which could hold a massive spook of film, which could take 500 pictures. By today’s standards, the Nikon FE is a very “Manual” camera. But in 1979, it was full of automatic features which older SLR’s lacked: The mirror automatically flipped up and returned when you pressed the shutter release. The lens aperture automatically stopped down and opened back up. And the light meter was indexed to the lens. And, of course, it could automatically set the shutter speed, but it could still run in full manual mode. It had an M90 shutter speed: A fully mechanical speed which you could use even if the batteries were totally dead. Try that with a DSLR. I don’t miss film processing, but no digital camera matches the elegance of these old cameras. They are a joy to shoot with. I recently purchased one and I’m cleaning it up and replacing it’s light seals. Once restored, I’m looking forward to shooting a few rolls. For weeks I’d been craving a cannolo, a Sicilian pastry with a reputation only matched by its ubiquity. These simple tubes of fried dough stuffed with sweet ricotta filling are so common that friends have labeled them “baby’s first Italian pastry,” though this somewhat dismissive nomenclature most definitely belies the dessert’s deliciousness. Sure, a cannolo may be the safe choice, but it’s never the wrong choice. When in doubt, choose cannoli. There’s the tourist trap pastry shop, which at this time of year is packed to bursting with expectant travelers and out-of-towners ignorant to the fact that the singular noun form of cannoli is cannolo- how gauche. There’s the place the locals frequent, jammed with high school kids enjoying the freedom of long, hot summer nights. And there’s the new, American-style coffee shop that seems to earn only askance looks, but is actually quite excellent. While not all cannoli are created equal, it’s an easy treat to get right. After ten minutes of perusing the shops of Hanover Street I decide to put off this fateful decision for later in the night. My camera’s loaded with 400 speed film, and the sun’s setting. The cannoli can wait. In the meantime I’ve got film to burn, and tonight I’m shooting a classic Nikon SLR, the FE. Beginning with the F2 in 1971, it seemed that for the next two decades Nikon could do no wrong. Amateurs and enthusiasts now populated the most lucrative segment of the buying public, and large, heavy cameras like the F2 were being outpaced by tinier models with more features. These smaller, often electronic machines (initially regarded as unreliable) were beginning to prove themselves as real workhorses. Olympus’ OM1, released in 1972, had shown beyond doubt that enthusiast shooters preferred a compact form factor, and the runaway success of Canon’s A series had irrevocably ushered in the era of electronic auto-exposure cameras for the masses. Nikon needed a camera to compete. This camera, an entirely new design made to incredible standards, was the first machine in what would become a robust and long-lived series of small, semi-professional SLRs. In time this range of size-conscious cameras would encompass six machines; the FM, FM2, FE, FE2, FA, and the FM3A all shared the same internal chassis and general design ethos. They were miniature, extremely capable, and masterfully crafted. And most important of all, there was a model for every type of photo geek. Released in 1978, it’s a camera that’s much friendlier to advanced enthusiasts and new shooters primarily due to its ability to shoot in aperture-priority mode. But just because it was crafted with slightly less-versed shooters in mind doesn’t mean it was the lesser camera, on the contrary, it was as robust and exceptional as the FM before it, and the FE even offers certain features that are missing in any of the other cameras in the compact SLR series.
