Yes, one could play with the Kindle and eventually find out how to use certain functions, but why do trial and error. Why not have step by step instructions from someone who knows. The Kindle is a wonderful tool and will revolutionize how we read today just as the iPod did for music listeners. Total waste of money for anyone excidited about getting into Mac who has been a PC geek for over 20 years hoping for those tantalizing tid bits not explained in the manuals or in magazines. This book does not meet any expectations in this regard.Convenience is What you are getting. For example, it reminded me to enable certain features to make sure they work before trying them out on my kindle which isn't a big deal but saved me a few headaches and a lot of battery power. I'm an IT savvy person who could have written this manual if I had wanted to. I have GBs of free content, both audio and text and can easily get more. It's worth the money to save you the TIME it would take you to find all this info on your own and the trial and error it would require you to get it done. The doc's organization is flawed in places where you think you are reading on your kindle but it's really taking you to a website. Not a big deal, just pay attention. It doesn't deserve any of the 1-2 star votes it gets here, I think. They just don't realize they were the wrong audience for it. I look forward to the completed version.Obviously, as with any book of this type, Kindle users will have discovered some or many of the ideas presented for themselves. However, even I, a true Kindle lover and gadget geek, mined valuable information that I had not discovered on my own. I have to charge this every couple of days and I read a couple hours every day. I thought perhaps the cover, which puts the Kindle in sleep mode, was the cause. That is, sleep mode was using up the charge. It appeared as if, when I shut off the screen and closed the cover, that it turned the screen back on and put it in sleep mode. My next try was to turn the screen off and NOT close the cover, so the screen would stay off between reading. (I'd close the cover only if I took my Kindle away from my bedside). Still no luck. I have to charge every couple of days. This is disappointing. If I had a long day of travel, the charge would not last the entire day of travel unless I found a place to charge en route.My three stars are an interim assessment since I've not yet been right to the end. However, although clearer than many technical manuals, this one does, like most, tend towards telling you what can be done while being not entirely clear how to do it.He got a lot of happy use out of it before he passed away, so that worked. I'm not a tech savvy person, but not unteachable. Since I was not interested in using the Alexa feature right now, I disabled it. There were a few pages regarding Fire but most of the manual was about how to use Alexa. It helped me not at all.
