The new forklift was perfectly suited for use in fertilizer and dairy farms, so the forklifters stopped in white for painting the body, which was associated with cleanliness and disinfection. The dictionary gave a description of the trot (in English “bobcat”), which sounded like “a strong, fast, dexterous animal.” Eureka! So the brand appeared Bobcat. The company gained popularity mainly thanks to the first mini-loader, invented almost 50 years ago in the USA for mechanization of labor-consuming loading and unloading operations in farms. The eight tracks of a song or sequence can also send MIDI information independently and polyphonically on eight different MIDI channels. However, the range of MIDI controllers is not as wide as it should be considering the amount of remote programming (real time) which is now possible using this method. While transmitting in Mode 1 (Omni on, Poly), the KS-32 receives in Omni, Poly Multi and Mono modes, which means it can not only be used as a multitimbral sound module on the end of your sequencer, it can also be hooked up to MIDI guitar and breath controllers. Other MIDI highlights include the ability to respond to real time and song position pointers. The KS-32 is a deceptively simple keyboard. So deceptive and so simple that after a few hours of busily trying out all my favourite pieces with the most suitable and then most unlikely sounds, I began to panic. What the hell was I going to write about? 'Nice keyboard feel.Nevertheless, for a reviewer it's actually quite hard to reach a conclusion about something that's well packaged, well specified and well made, yet lacks that spark of brilliance which would involve words like 'visionary', 'inspirational' and 'significant'. As a musician, though, what you look for in an instrument is somewhat different. Particularly if you're the kind of musician who plays in three bands, does a weekly spot at the local restaurant, as well as Sunday lunchtimes down at the pub as part of a drum and keyboard duo, and on a rare night off might dabble around with a sequencer and a few bits of MIDI gear. This, I feel, is who the KS-32 is aimed at and I have to say that Ensoniq are to be congratulated for coming up with exactly the right package. It may be evolutionary rather the revolutionary, but it's user-friendly, versatile, relatively sophisticated and can function as a standalone music workstation or as the central instrument in a deep and meaningful relationship with MIDI. And, of course, it has weights. It certainly felt good to me. So go put your feelers out at a dealer near you. Price: Ensoniq KS-32 MIDI Studio ?1895 inc VAT More from: Sound Technology plc (Contact Details) Voice architecture KS-32 sounds are divided into two basic categories: standard sounds and drum sounds. While standard sounds comprise up to three voices plus an effect, drum sounds comprise 17 voices and effect. Not surprisingly, they are programmed slightly differently. In both cases you start by selecting waves (one wave per voice) from a menu of 168. Each wave is then modified by two digital filters and an LFO. Three complex envelope generators control pitch, filter cutoff frequency and amplitude respectively. The KS-32 envelopes bear a faint resemblance to the venerable ADSR (attack decay sustain release) controls of yesteryear. They are, however, considerably more refined, giving you control over four time segments and four levels - rather than three time segments and one level. You can also choose default values for these envelopes from 17 templates covering common instrument types (string, brass etc) which can make light work of programming. The complex matrix modulation scheme is one of the most interesting aspects of the voice architecture. This gives you a choice of 16 modulation sources which can then be routed to Pitch, LFO Depth, Filters, Volume, Wave Start as well as effects parameters. Modulation sources comprise LFO, Env 1, Env 2, Amp, Noise 1, Noise 2, Velocity, Keyboard Tracking, Timbre, VCA footpedal, Pitch Bend, Mod Wheel, Mod Wheel plus Pressure, Pressure, and External MIDI controllers. Making waves There are two classes of wave which we'll characterise as cottons and synthetics. The cottons are samples derived from real instruments while the synthetics consist of sampled and algorithmically generated waves that give you more of a 'synthesiser' sound. These are divided into four categories labelled Waveforms, Inharmonics, Transwaves and Multi-wave. The first lot consist of single cycles of sound repeated over and over - sawtooth, square, triangle and wave sounds, plus organs, pipes, bells and digital piano. The second lot contain many cycles of the same sound and are therefore full of inharmonics - that is, frequencies that are not exact multiples of the fundamental frequency. TransWaves (unique to Ensoniq) use many single cycle waveforms each with a different harmonic spectrum. The playback parameters allow you to start the wave playing at one of these waveforms then move through the wavetable. As you do so, you can continually vary the timbre of the sound using any one of the 16 modulators. You select the number of the wave you want to start at, the number of waves you want to play and whether you want to loop through them going backwards or forwards. Polyphony The KS-32 can play 32 voices at any one time. Or to put it another way, for presets using only one voice, you've got 32 note polyphony. The more voices used, the less notes you get. A sound using three voices will give you only 10-note polyphony before voice stealing starts to occur. However, there are various things you can do to minimize this heinous crime, such as assign low, medium or high priorities to the voices in a sound to establish a pecking order as to who should be robbed first. Using it with a Roland SC-8850 and a Roland Pk-5a Midi-bass pedals. Wondering if I need a merger box to use the keyboard and the Bass pedals at teh same time through the sound module and still use the keyboards internal sounds. Suggestions? Thanks, Steve It's still available in reprint from Syntaur who owns many of the rights to the older Ensoniq OSes, etc. You can get the german version here: You will also really LOVE KSEdit which you can pick up the new version (2.3) at: Personally, I have SQs (same series), but there are other forumites with KS-32s. Ask away! PS - did you get any ROM cards with it? These were sometimes distributed on RAM cards which are volatile (use a button battery), e.g. Voice Crystal and Syntaur. A number of them are just the internal sounds (mixes) from the other models, so do your homework before you buy any. You can easily get these by trading with other SQ and KS owners. The original SQ series were more limited. With KSEdit, you really don't need the cards, unless you need the new patches they offer (hint: the Kawai DC-32 is the same as the Ensoniq MC-32 RAM card). KSEdit is an editor program for your PC that allows you to communicate with the KS (or SQ) via midi and access all of it's functions as well as store and fully edit sounds, sequences, etc. A truly awesome program that the author deserves a world of thanks for. He has added so many functions, there's not much you will find missing. You will want this to make backups of your patches and to load those you trade for. I'll be happy to send you some once you get set up.Thanks for your help. Steve You may want to ask around on those, I know the folks here can share some opinions. If you're going to have a number of modules and keys, you may want to consider a patchbay interface to help keep it all straight and easy. I'm sure the group has opines on that as well. I did find an online manual but it was all in German. Don't have the link handy but I can dig it up if you are interested. I have one and am looking to sell it.I have one and am looking to sell it.It included a pretty good road case (like an anvil but not as nice of latches). Oh well I'm not really much of a player and I mainly bought it as a weighted controller for my studio (as well as some extra sounds) I do my sequencing in Nuendo (therefor I don't need the onboard sequencer) and I guess I can figure the rest of it out. Key actions feels great and most of the sounds are pretty usable. You may want to search the sales history on Ebay to get a handle on what they've been going for lately and then figure what the VAT would be where you live. Mike T. Sampled waveform sounds give decent acoustic emulations of pianos, strings, etc. The synth engine has 32 voices but patches can use from 1-3 voices so in reality it's between 10-16 voice polyphony most of the time. You can increase the apparent polyphony by programming voice stealing priorities within each patch (i.e. in a 3 voice patch you can allow only 1 or maybe 2 voices to be stolen by new notes). The sequencer is reasonably powerful but nobbled by the small display. There is no disk drive onboard so you need to back up patches and sequences via MIDI sysex transfers. Tough to program from the front panel because there are a zillion parameters and a small screen. If you can get a software patch editor like Unisys it will be worth it. Similar in concept to Korg Wavestation, PPG, etc. Great for pads. Onboard effects processor sound good but there is only one so when used in multitimbral modes, all patches have to share it. There are some multi-effect combinations using reverb that can be set up so some patches use only the reverb while others use both effects. As long as you don't rely on the effects to make each patch sound good, this works out OK. A very cool feature missing from many other synths is that if you sustain some notes and switch the patch the sustained notes continue to play the old patch (rather than cutting off abruptly) while any new notes play the new patch. This is a big help when sequencing. Keyboard action is pretty good and MIDI implementation very good. If you're after spacey digital textures, this will do them for you. If you want squelchy analog sounds, look elesewhere. The organs are also nice. Otherwise, no problems. Followed the instructions in the manual, using the System-MIDI menu to set the FtswR to SUSTAIN pedal, using the Ensoniq SW-6 pedal. It is backwards, meaning with the pedal UP it sustains, and pushing it down stops the sound. There is no polarity switch on the pedal. There are no instructions in the manual regarding flipping the polarity within the keyboard. Anyone have any ideas. There's nothing I hate more than when the simplest operation like this doesn't work.:X Thanks alot, T If you haven't tried it already, power-down your Ensoniq, make sure the footswitch is plugged in, THEN turn on the Ensoniq and see if it's not backwards anymore. If it's still backwards, and there's no settings option to reverse it, then you're pretty much stuck with having to get a different foot switch.I was thinking about that, I do have one pedal with a polarity switch, it's just not a piano-style one.but it'll prob have to do. Cheers, T A: Unfortunately, no. I searched and found a thread with step by step instructions on changing the battery and I plan on doing that. One Question though.do I have to back up the factory sounds before I remove the old battery. Will I lose any ROM or internal memory sounds. The previous owner told me that he replaced the battery and that the warning always came on anyway. I am still going to replace the battey and hopefully get rid of the warning message. Any other tips or trick about the KS-32 I should know about. I do have a manual and I have learned how to edit sounds. I am looking forward to being able to use my PC for that. I am going to have to get into the manual to learn how to back this stuff up. I don't have any memory cards. Can I back this stuff up onto my PC when I get running with a MIDI set-up. I have another thread going looking for advise on which MIDI interface I should buy. I do have the KSedit program alreadly downloaded. The multitrack sequencer can be increased to a 58000 note capacity with the SQX-70 expansion and contain 70 sequences and 30 songs. It has three response levels, soft, medium, hard, and sounds respond different for each pressure level. The Manual is very good too, although they put the tutorial before explaining the button layout, but you could figured it out. It's main disadvantage is that it has no arpeggiator, which has become really useful. The display may seem a little small, but it gives complete easy to read information.Brasses are also superb, but the organs are by far the best in years.
