With the northern mountains covered in verdant jungle and sprinkled with age-old hill tribes, elephant camps, and ancient ruins, it is no wonder that the North is becoming an unforgettable experience for travelers. Laid back cities like Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai offer a burgeoning restaurant and nightlife scene that provides the perfect respite after experiencing the natural beauty of Northern Thailand. T. F. Rhoden has spent seven years exploring this fascinating country. First as a graduate student, then as a Peace Corps volunteer, and finally as an aid worker on the Thai-Burma border. Through his unique experiences, Rhoden provides insight into the country that has become his second home. With a comprehensive background section covering the history, culture, and logistics of travel, and sixteen sections dedicated to each stop on his recommended travel route, this book will allow travelers to feel like locals while enjoying the indisputable beauty that the North has to offer. Volunteering: There are a lot of opportunities to give back, and in so many different ways. Our guidebook will tell you where, why—and most importantly—how to get involved. Nightlife: The North offers travelers a night out that many thought only Bangkok could offer. Find the best spots to steal a cocktail, spend a relaxing evening, or party with the best of Thailand. Language: Thai is not an easy language to learn, so we provide the essential everyday phrases and a few more slangy ones just for fun! Donna 5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for our first trip to Thailand. It helped in planning our trip and deciding what to see and what to do in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. It had a good history of the peoples of the North.I also bought the usual Lonely Planet Thailand and a Frommer's Guide to Thailand mostly because it was the most recently published of the books at the time. I felt the author's background was suited to give me some alternatives to the major sights in the less traveled region beyond Bangkok and the South. Unfortunately, I wasted a lot of time with Rhoden's book. I found a lot of interesting, off-beat and popular sights, restaurants and travel options he got wrong and or omitted. And spent some time looking for places in his book that were bad or just not there. The maps are terrible and were very frequently wrong. Recommendations like Ayes restaurant in Chiang Rai was the biggest rip-off in all of Thailand as far as could tell at 3 or 4X the prices of similar restaurants. The author claims the 'assortment of wines' was the best in town. It wasn't at all - but it was the most expensive food outside the Peninsula Hotel in Bangkok. If you read it all - he was trying to say we could not NOT put this in the book because it was unique. He complicates sentences (and includes some Elizabethan era words to do so in some cases) making me wonder if he just read some Shakespeare and was trying to impress himself. I am sure he has been there, (I just can't tell how recently) and I applaud him for his volunteer work. Its just not a good book.http://www.visualmotion.nl/uploads/first-alert-sc9120b-manual-carbon-monoxide.xml If you feel compelled to buy this book - do not rely on it as a primary source.
