One person that they recommend had a horrible reputations within the community and only with boots on the ground will you be able to figure out who the most honest and reputable people are. The same is true for builders and architects. Mexico is a drug lord infested country, but the Yucatan is very safe. The country has serious controls over money flowing in and out due to the drug trade, so be careful how the money is sent to your contractor and how you transfer funds. This is like any expat community with those who think they are big stuff with few dollars and finally getting a maid and maybe a small pool and then people who really want to contribute to the community. Many Mexicans are very poor financially here, but they are kind and very religious. They work incredibly hard and it is important to respect the community. We are now permanent residents of Mexico so the Chicago designation is no longer valid.Yes it is true that you can not navigate using the table of contents.which makes this book a royal pain. That being said, I quickly got used to using the search feature to navigate to where I wanted to go. BUT what Really makes this book useful are all the links to websites. My time is valuable. And to save hours and hours trying to find useful sites on a general Internet search makes this book very useful. I am glad I bought the book to support that authors. But please make sure a navigation engine is added to the table of contents. Most important this Essential Guide can easily be the guide to living in Mexico in general. Much of what the author recommends will stand up well to any part of the county you choose to stay or live. For instance, never plug anything that you value into a wall outlet, use a power strip. Even in the States I use a power strip for high end electrical stuff, but I could see that in Mexico a power strip could be your best friend. Small stuff like that can make living in Mexico or Merida a whole lot easier.http://www.gesgo.de/userfiles/final-cut-express-4-manual-pdf.xml The only major problem with Merida is that it is expensive to get there.I agree completely with the comments by Lisa, who did another review for this book. The worst part is that there are no page numbers so you can't go and find something from the index. Really, how hard would it be to fix the defects and put out the new version so we can download it and use it in the way it was meant to be used?It has lots of information about the region and is really a good read in general. This books helps with daily life. Buy it before you get here, I wish I did! Thanks!Severe formatting errors make the digital book almost impossible to use. I used the Kindle Highlight function to create a rudimentary active Table of Contents. Turns out there is no Part VI. The text appears to leap haphazardly from topic to topic. It's a shame because the book contains much good, local information that I haven't seen in other guidebooks. If the formatting was fixed I would recommend the digital book. The chapter on real estate though is extremely biased (even slanderous) and lacks any real knowledge or understanding of real estate in general and the local market conditions. There are actually a few times in the book where it criticizes others for showing preference and bias, at the same time it recommends their competition. All in all, the book is pretty good for learning about basic local information, just don't rely on it for anything important that requires real knowledge and experience. Can't wait to head back this summer for 3 weeks. This book was absolutely superb. I couldn't stop making notes. Will definitely be ordering the 2013 edition when it becomes available. However, the author gives some irresponsibly damaging personal opinions that are completely bogus. For example, he claims Amigos de Artesanos Nuevos de Yucatan is not an authorized Mexican not for profit organization with the legal right to solicit funds. Wrong! I just recently read and translated to English the documents, stamped by the government, giving AANY the status of Asociacion Civil (not for profit organization) dated October 14 2010. As far as my own opinion goes, an author this irresponsible should not be taken seriously as a guide to anythingYes it is true that you can not navigate using the table of contents.which makes this book a royal pain. Also few illustrations. Example: there is a description of each Colonia (district or neighborhood) but no way to place them geographically because there is no map. Are you ready to make a second or retirement home in an exotic and exciting foreign city for that is a ninety-minute flight from the U.S.? Are you thinking about embarking on an adventure of a lifetime. This book will help answer these questions! This isn’t just a guide book but an idea book. It is something of another element to give you direction with your guide books like Lonely Planet or Moon Guide. The book is not made to compete with guidebooks—it is made to complement them. In the book you will find the author’s favorite travel adventure trips of the places, excursions and outings, which he likes for different reasons. Among them; tranquility, history, a view of picturesque villages, a connection with the ancient Maya, changing landscape, and a look at another aspect of life, which will take you out of the mainstream and off the beaten path. Many of the excursions have been by bicycle and bus. For an adventure that takes you out of the mainstream to explore some of this peaceful, and fascinating world, follow in the author’s path to the places without trinket shops and tour buses.
