Spencer Doren is the 'one man band' mastermind behind 3 Leaf Audio, the company he started in 2008 offering pedals made 'by a musician, for musicians'. We borrowed two units from our good friends at the UK bass specialist Bass Direct - a GR2, which we're reviewing in this issue, and the Proton Envelope Filter, which we'll be featuring next time. Those who familiar with the original pedal will know that it was quite the beast in physical size. Put it this way, you'd never trip having not noticed it under foot. Spencer has designed his version of the Meatball pedal from a 'less is more' standpoint. It makes sense as there's a lot of hardware to shoe horn in to such a small box in order to retain those classic soundsandstill have enough room for a 9v battery! So if it's the sounds you want to hear - click the video first! I found that with my own custom bass that has a very high output, I needed to back the 'gain' down quite a way to the point where the filter had more of an effect. You can see this in more extreme settings in the video. The control can be likened to that of an amplifier gain control. The attack knob adjusts the initial response of the filter and the decay controls how long the filter takes to sweep the note. 3Leaf Audio suggests making sure the decay is set higher than the attack to allow the filter to be more effective. The decay control rewards the player with either short filter blips all the way up to long sweeps. The tone control is self explanatory and allows the overall pedal tone to be controlled much like that of a tone control on a guitar. In application, the GR2 is equally at home on guitar as well as bass. On the far right side the sweep switch. This simply reverses the direction of the sweep effect. A little time should be spent readjusting the other controls that interact with the sweep switch as it may not be immediately noticeable what the difference in some settings when switching back and forth. Something we noticed in the studio! You'll find these 'under the bonnet' by removing the bottom of the metal case. The Low Pass setting retains all of the instrument low end as part of the output whereas the 'band pass' setting focuses the effect sound in the mid and treble ranges and thus low end is subdued. This would be a good setting if you were mixing a clean signal with the low end intact elsewhere in the signal path. There's a gain trimpot for boosting the signal from the filter should that be needed also. Finally for the internal controls the ability to switch between true bypass and buffered bypass modes. This is very handy for signal integrity and this is covered in more detail in the manual. For those who are into experimenting with sounds and trying things out with other instruments, this is a great addition. Plug a drum machine or synth in to the input and use it to control the action of the effect, plug your bass in to the FX Return socket and the effect will be applied to the bass signal. You can of course use the send and return like a normal loop, so that you can switch on and off another pedal simultaneously when the GR2 is kicked on. I really can't fault it - chock full of legendary sounds and built like the proverbial brick outhouse, it's a pedal with a boutique price tag, but I'd say that it's worth every penny. Higher settings develop long, sweeping envelope sounds, while lower settings develop shorter, more “bubbly” envelope sounds. Or you can put a fuzz or an octave in the loop to get those cheesy 70’s synth sounds. If the pedal in the FX loop is left on, it will turn on and off with the Groove Regulator. The FX loop can also be used with external triggers. If you plug your instrument into FX RETURN, then whatever is plugged into the IN jack will trigger the filter. You can use anything as an external trigger. Anything goes. Yes and no, it is an envelope filter after all, a pretty versatile one after all, but as a sound effect, it has its limitations.CLINICAMAXCLIN.COM/images/3l-manual.pdf It does bring the funk, it does great autowah sounds, it can quack and do vowely stuff, it is great for rhythm, can add dynamics to your riffs, it does go from bright and lively to dark and swampy. But it is not as extreme as for instance the Mutron filter, for instance, I could not nail that that classic chewy Mutron sound nor did I hear that typical Q-Tron growl. But I did get a much cleaner and easier to handle filter sound when playing with the Groove Regulator. It is not too sensitive, it does not overload, no volume spikes as well. I think this has to do with the width of decay and range controls being a bit narrower as opposed to that of the Moogerfooger Low Pass Filter, the Lovetone Meatball, the Electro Harmonix Q-Tron or the Mutron III. It is much easier to get a good sound out of the Groove Regulator. With its depth and range being slightly narrower, it also becomes a lot easier to tweak it to perfection. Actually, I could not find any bad sounding setting on the Groove Regulator. Only when you abuse the controls and have the attack and decay all the way up, it will start to struggle a little. Actually, I found a blubbery, fast filter wobble sound like that, a sound that I cannot dial in on the Meatball, the Moogerfooger or the Q-Tron. This should be adjusted based on the output of your instrument. Set sensitivity lower for high-output instruments and higher for low-output instruments. The sensitivity knob works best when the volume control on your instrument is at full volume. Start with it at the minimum position and turn clockwise until the desired sound is reached. Higher settings develop long, sweeping envelope. Decay should be set higher than attack so that the filter can sweep effectively. It works like the tone knob of a guitar or bass. Higher settings will accentuate the treble frequencies; lower settings increase the filter's warmth. The default position is HI which works well on guitar and bass. For users that want the fattest low-end sound, the LO setting is recommended. If you experience unwanted or excessive feedback, flip the switch to the down position. The feedback switch, when in the down position, also makes the envelope effect slightly more subtle. In the UP position, the filter sweeps normally. In the DOWN position, the sweep is reversed. You may need to change the settings of the attack and decay knobs; settings that work in the UP position won't always work well in the DOWN position. Naturally, the Groove Regulator was a hit, as were (and are) many of 3 Leaf’s iconic pedal designs. The Wonderlove tied in some improvements to the Groove Regulator, with a few notable additions that made it even cooler and more usable for bassists. All of the controls are well thought out and give the user a huge degree of control over the filter parameters. The knob feel is smooth with nice resistance, making accidental knob bumps a non-issue. I loved the Spartan look and feel of the Chromatron, and the row of top mounted jacks are always nice to see when pedalboard real estate is at a premium. I loved how easy it was to tweak the parameters and get it just right for pretty much whatever I was going for. My journey started with the good ole green 2-knob DOD FX25, and then the Electro Harmonix Q-tron, in all its big and clunky glory. The low pass resonant peak moves in the opposite direction from the additional higher frequency peaks. The resonant peaks are separated by 1.3 octaves. A four pole low pass with an extra peak at a lower frequency than the resonant peak. A four pole low pass with an extra peak at a higher frequency than the resonant peak. There is a little feedback to boost the non-notched frequencies. A three notch phaser with some feedback. Don’t forget to unplug the cable from the input when the unit is not in use— otherwise the batteries will continue to drain. In calibrate Do not dispose of the device with the household waste. See the effect types section for more details. The effect knob also allows you to select the CALIBRATE mode for calibrating the signals from a Hot Hand sensor. See the Use with Hot Hand section for details. Turning the knob counterclockwise will result in the filter moving over lower fre- quencies for a darker sound. Turning the knob clockwise will result in the filter sweep moving over higher fre- quencies, which will create a brighter and thinner sound. To the right side of the knob, marked as UP, the filter will move in a positive sweep from low to high with greater range as you turn the knob further to the right. To the left side of the knob, marked as DOWN, the filter will move in a negative sweep from high to low with increased range as With the Hot Hand controller plugged in, the knob controls the positive or negative depth of the sweep. The range of the speed control is divided into two parts. To the left of the midpoint (12 o’clock) both the attack and release times of the enve- lope detector are controlled together. They range from slow when fully turned to the left, to fast when set toward the midpoint. As the knob is turned to the right past the midpoint, the attack is fixed at the fastest set- ting while the decay time gets slower. In Hot Hand mode, the knob controls the response of the motion sensor. FLAIL being the slowest and PICK being the fastest response. See the Use with Hot Hand section for more details. The mounting angle limitations of conventional projectors are caused by cooling issues. Ultra-high pressure mercury lamps generate significant heat—and require carefully designed ventilation and cooling systems. But because heat rises, the cooling system performs better at some installation angles than others. Typical lamp-equipped projectors are designed to function right-side up (when sitting on a table) or upside down (when hanging from a ceiling). These projectors tend to continue operating properly when tilted up or down at intermediate angles. But when they’re rotated from landscape to portrait mode, there’s trouble. Suddenly the hottest part of the lamp becomes inaccessible to cooling air. Premature lamp failure ensues. 14 Many lamp-equipped projectors can be tilted vertically (i.e. for floor projection) but cannot be rotated into portrait mode due to limitations in the way lamps can be oriented.
